Peacocks Bounced By Bulldogs Despite Second Half Rally

UIU trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before rallying to take the lead with just over three minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs came back with a run of their own to take control in the final three minutes.

Upper Iowa men's basketball had their three-game winning streak snapped by the Truman State Bulldogs on Saturday night, 84-80. UIU trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before rallying to take the lead with just over three minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs came back with a run of their own to take control in the final three minutes.

The Peacocks (3-4) were led by reigning NSIC South Player of the Week Jimmy Roth, who had 19 points on 6-12 shooting and 7 rebounds. Jernell Hughes chipped in 13 points, while Luke Lenhart added 11 and Dennis Austin had 10. Carson Parker led UIU with 8 rebounds. Truman State (2-1) had five players in double figures, led by center Connor Erickson with 21 points and guard Cory Myers with 19.

The visitors led all but 57 seconds in the first half as the Bulldogs took a 40-32 lead at the break. Truman State shot 50-percent (13-26) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while UIU shot just 37.5-percent (12-32) and 14.3-percent (2-14) from three point range. The Peacocks were plagued by foul trouble throughout the half as Upper Iowa was whistled for 16 fouls in the first half and had six different players called for two fouls.

The Peacocks went on a 25-6 run early in the second half to take the lead, 55-53. The Bulldogs had pulled ahead by 17 just two minutes into the half, but the UIU run fueled by 7 points from both Roth and Hughes, put the Peacocks back in control.

Starting at the 10 minute mark, the teams exchanged the lead nine times and were tied three times over a frantic seven-minute stretch that ended with UIU leading 70-69 with 3:21 remaining.

Over the next minute and a half, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to go up 77-70. The Peacocks battled back and cut the deficit to one possession on three occasions, but Truman State responded with free throws each time to put the game out of reach. Truman State made more free throws (25-38) than the Peacocks attempted in the game (14-20).

Upper Iowa will be back in Dorman Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they take on Bellevue University at 7 p.m.
