The #4 Wildcats of Wayne State College defeated the Peacock volleyball team in three sets on Parents Night in Fayette. Upper Iowa's defense gave the team opportunities recording 73 digs in the match, but Wayne State's defense matched the home team's dig total and took advantage of their service game to secure the win. With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 24-5 overall and 16-3 in the NSIC, while UIU drops to 14-14 overall and 8-11 in the conference.
Wayne State was able to get on a few runs stringing points together in the middle of each set to get away from a hard-fighting Upper Iowa squad. As a team, the Peacocks hit .119 for the match, but the story was that without the hitting of
Jennifer Mundt (.355) and
Alisha VanderWoude (.250) the average would have been much worse. The pair of UIU hitters accounted for 20 of the team's 35 kills including Mundt's 14 knockdowns. While the offense was struggling, the defense was keeping the Peacocks in it with three players reaching double digit digs including
Taylor Williams (14),
Malissa LeClaire (14) and
Ashley Larson (12).
The Wildcats hit .248 in the match with 42 kills and only 9 attack errors while holding the Peacocks to 15, 17 and 18 points in the three sets. Elizabeth Gebhardt and Alyssa Frauendorfer racked up 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while Leisa McClintock handed out 32 assists and Michaela Mestl dug up 23 balls.
With her 14 kills, Mundt is now 16 kills shy of her single-season record of 439, which she set a season ago. Upper Iowa can still tie for eighth place in the standings if they can defeat Augustana University at home tomorrow in the team's season finale at 4 p.m. in Fayette. In addition to defeating the #20 Vikings tomorrow, the Peacocks would also need the University of Sioux Falls to upset Minnesota State University, Mankato to create the need for the tie-breakers to go into effect as three teams are still vying for the final NSIC Championships spot.
UIU will honor their seniors prior to the match on Saturday.
