Upper Iowa women's soccer fell 2-1 to the Beavers of Minot State on Sunday afternoon in a match played in Minot, N.D. Once again, it was
Madie Edwards who scored the Peacocks goal, her third of the weekend and eighth of the season, but the Beavers were able to score late and take match. The loss moves the Peacocks back to .500 at 4-4-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Northern Sun, while Minot State improves to 9-1-0 and 7-0 in the NSIC.
"We weren't able to get our foot in the game, which is a credit to Minot State," said Diaz. "They disrupted our flow on offense. We were not as prepared as we needed to be for this match."
The Peacocks had to withstand a barrage of Beaver attacks all game long as MSU took 24 shots compared to just 3 shots from UIU.
"Minot State was motivated to win this game," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "They came out blazing, but I felt like we matched their intensity in the first half."
Minot State got on the board first with a goal 30 minutes into the opening half, but Upper Iowa responded immediately with an Edwards' goal just two minutes later. A Peacock corner kick was punched out by the Minot goalkeeper, but sophomore
Charlotte Ryan corralled the ball in the box and sent in a cross that was headed in by Edwards.
After heading to halftime tied, the Beavers scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to take a 2-1 lead.
Kaitlyn Emanuel made six saves in goal, while
Brianne Fenton led UIU with a pair of shots.
"We'll take the lessons learned from this game," said Diaz. "We're halfway through the conference season, but nothing has been won or lost. We've got be ready for next weekend. That's now our focus and we'll try to get two wins."
The Peacocks host Northern State on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m., and Minnesota State Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m., as a part of UIU's Homecoming weekend.
