Peacocks Shake Off Wolves With Two Edwards Goals

Upper Iowa 2, Northern State 1 - Madie Edwards scored a pair of goals, including a game-winning penalty kick with 15 minutes left to propel the Peacocks to victory

The Peacocks women's soccer team got two more goals from senior Madie Edwards to earn a 2-1 victory over the Wolves of Northern State. The pair of goals gives Edwards 10 on the year, tied for the most in the conference and matching her season totals from her sophomore and junior seasons. The Crystal Lake, Illinois native is also now second all-time in goals scored and total points in UIU women's soccer history. With the victory, UIU moves above .500 to 5-4-2 and 4-3-1 in conference, while NSU falls to 4-6-1 and 2-5-1 in NSIC play.

Upper Iowa got on the board first when Edwards got the ball at the top of the box, made a move to her left and stung a left-footed shot on the ground that beat the Wolves goalkeeper just inside the left post. Juniors Lauren Sharp and Christiana Atteberry earned assists on the play.

In a half that was largely controlled through the midfield by UIU, the Peacocks took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Wolves nearly knotted the game at 1-1 early in the second half when a NSU shot from inside the box got behind UIU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel, but freshman Erin Svensson was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line. A few minutes later, however, Northern State would get on the board, scoring off a set piece from just outside the box with 22 minutes into the second half.

The game wasn't tied for long as eight minutes after the NSU goal, the Wolves were called for a handball in their own penalty area and gave the Peacocks a penalty. Edwards, who is a perfect 2-for-2 on PK's this season, converted the kick and gave Upper Iowa a 2-1 lead that would hold up over the final 14 minutes.

UIU took 19 shots in the game, putting 12 on goal, both of which are the second highest totals in a single game this season. Edwards led the Peacocks with seven shots, while Emanuel made six saves between the pipes.

Upper Iowa will be back at Pattison Field on Sunday, playing the first match Peacocks doubleheader with the UIU men's team. The women's match is against Minnesota State Moorhead and will kick off at 11 a.m.
