Peacocks Can't Recover from First-Half Deficit Against Vikings

Augustana 41 - Upper Iowa 31. The Peacock football team outscored the Vikings 17-10 in the second half, but couldn't comeback from their 31-3 halftime deficit.

The Vikings of Augustana University controlled the first half against the Peacocks on the way to a 41-20 win in Sioux Falls, S.D.  Upper Iowa trailed 31-3 at the break, but found their stride in the third quarter to cut the gap to 31-17 with a pair of touchdowns.  The first-half hole proved to be too much to overcome as the team fell to 5-4 overall and 2-3 against the NSIC South Division.  Augie improved to 7-2 overall with the victory.

After the home team took a 14-0 lead, the Peacocks drove the ball into the redzone, but failed on a fourth down at the 14-yard line to close out a 15-play drive.  The defense gave the UIU offense the ball right back with an interception on Augie's first play by Nick Corley.  Corley returned the ball to the 8-yard line, but the offense had to settle for a field goal by Brady Beuschel from 29 yards.

The field goal was UIU's only points of the half as the Vikings squashed any chance at a momentum swing with a 96-yard return on the ensuing kickoff by Jason Greenway.  Greenway's twin brother Justin capped off the home team's scoring in the first half with a 37-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Trey Heid.

Upper Iowa took the opening kick of the second half 65 yards for a touchdown on seven plays.  Freshman Brent Lammers capped off the drive with a 5-yard run into the endzone for his first collegiate rushing touchdown.  The Peacocks made it two straight touchdowns in the third quarter when Lammers hit Trey MacTaggart for a short 2-yard score bringing Upper Iowa within two scores, 31-17.

Augustana ended their second half drought with a field goal to bump their lead up to 17.  The Peacocks put together another 70-yard drive on 11 plays that spanned two quarters.  The drive stalled in the redzone again as Beuschel converted his second trifecta of the night pulling back within two scores, 34-20, just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.

UIU was held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the quarter with three drives ending in turnovers; one on downs, one interception and one fumble.

The final score of the night came on a Heid's third touchdown pass of the day and second connection with Matt Heller from 39 yards away.  Augie tried to add one more field goal late in the fourth, but Garrett Johnston blocked the attempt and Derek Hurschman returned the ball 36 yards.

As a team, the Peacocks held advantages in first downs (30-15), rushing yards (165-91), passing yards (303-276) and total offense (468-367).  The disparity in offensive yards may have been a direct result of the Vikings productivity on kick returns as they had the 96-yard return and then added three more for 75 yards.

Alex Wahl dominated on defense with 16 tackles including 10 solo stops and 2.5 tackles for loss.  The Peacock senior had one of three sacks with Isaac Freese and Jesse Hynek recording the other two quarterback takedowns.  Linebackers Zach Gardner and Cole Stephen registered 8 and 6 tackles respectively.

Lammers completed 33 of his 53 passes for 303 yards and one touchdown, but the freshman did throw a pair of interceptions.  UIU's quarterback added 71 yards and a score on 20 carries.  Jalen Amis continued his torrid pace for receptions with 9 grabs for 62 yards, while Jarred Edmonds pulled in 8 passes for 101 yards.  MacTaggart caught 6 balls with a touchdown, while Jesse Vizzini and Derrick Portis recorded 5 and 4 catches, respectively.

Upper Iowa will head to Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. next Saturday, Nov. 7.  The Peacocks and Wildcats will kick off at 1 p.m.
