The Upper Iowa women's soccer team got to the positive side of the win-loss column for the first time this season with a 2-0 victory at U-Mary in Bismarck, N.D., on Saturday afternoon.
Madie Edwards scored both goals for UIU and now has tallied seven goals in nine games this season. The win improves the Peacocks record to 4-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, while the loss moves U-Mary to 1-6 this season and 1-5 in the NSIC.
"A win like this absolutely helps our confidence grow," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "We played a good 90-minutes and got a deserving 2-0 win today. Like we've said all year, we'll keep growing and building with each match."
The Peacocks were able to get on the board in the closing moments of
a back-and-forth first half. Edwards buried her first goal of the match on a penalty kick with less than a minute left in the first half, giving UIU a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw more of the same as the action continued up-and-down the field with both teams getting good looks at the goal. As time wound down, the Marauders were forced to push forward for the game-tying goal, but it was the Peacocks who would score, catching UM with a counter-attack.
Jordyn Ostrowski played a great ball forward and Edwards was able to finish to give UIU its 2-0 lead.
UIU and UM each had 10 shots in the game, with the Peacocks getting the edge in shots on goal 5-4. The Marauders, however, did take 10 corner kicks compared to just 1 for Upper Iowa.
"A big difference in the game was our ability to finish and defending their corners very well," said Diaz. "U-Mary is dangerous off set pieces and it's a credit to our defense to come up with those stops."
The Peacocks got two big saves from goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Emanuel, as well as a ball cleared off the line by
Erin Svensson to preserve the shutout.
The Peacocks will be back in action tomorrow when they take on the Minot State Beavers in Minot, N.D. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
