Peacocks Shutdown Southwest Baptist on Senior Day

Upper Iowa picked up a Senior Day win on Sunday, defeating the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 3-1.

The Peacocks men's soccer team picked up a Senior Day win on Sunday, defeating the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 3-1. With the win, the Peacocks improved to 11-3-1 on the season and 4-2 in MIAA play. The 11 wins matches the school record for the most wins in a season since Upper Iowa moved up to NCAA Division II.

Upper Iowa struck quickly with a goal by junior Ryan Pinkerton 16 minutes into the game. Senior Hugo Alves sent a through ball down the left side of the field and sophomore Johnny McBeth was able to send a cross into the box that Pinkerton got his foot on and tipped the ball past the SBU goalkeeper.

Early in the second half, UIU made it 2-0 as McBeth scored his second goal of the season. The Glasgow, Scotland native passed the ball to senior Greg Marshall at the top of the box and Marshall touched it back to McBeth, who ripped a left-footed shot into the back of the net. The goal marks the third time in four games that McBeth has scored against the Bearcats and he now has six goals through two years against SBU.

With less than 10 minutes left in the match, senior Troy Ewers scored to give Upper Iowa a 3-0 lead. The Peacock center back headed in a rebound off the crossbar for his first goal of the year and fourth of his UIU career.

With 16 seconds left in the game, the Bearcats scored on a penalty kick to make the score 3-1.

UIU outshot the Bearcats 21-7 on the day, led by Blair Lyons with four and Dominic Boland with three. Connor Rortvedt made five saves in goal for the Peacocks.

UIU will carry a two-game winning streak to St. Charles, Missouri where they will take on the Lindenwood Lions under the lights on Oct. 31. The game will kickoff at 6:30 p.m.
