Peacocks Win Important Region and Conference Match Over Lindenwood

UIU 2, LWU 1 - Upper Iowa scored a pair of goals in the first half on their way to victory after being held scoreless when the two teams met in Fayette.

In a battle of the top two teams in the MIAA, Upper Iowa defeated Lindenwood 2-1 under the lights in St. Charles, Missouri. Upper Iowa scored a pair of goals in the first half on their way to victory after being held scoreless when the two teams met in Fayette. Upper Iowa improved to 12-3-1 and 5-2 in conference, while Lindenwood fell to 8-6-2 and 4-2-1 in MIAA play.

With the win, the Peacocks made numerous headlines, including likely overtaking the Lions who came into the game ranked one spot ahead of UIU in the NCAA Central Region rankings. Upper Iowa was ranked third in the latest rankings while Lindenwood was second and only the top two teams in the region earn a spot in the national tournament. It was also the first time in school history that the Peacocks defeated the Lions in their ninth meeting. Finally, the 12th win sets a new record for the most wins in a single-season in school history.

The game started with a bang as the Peacocks took the lead less than two minutes after the opening whistle. Sebastian Smith knocked home a rebound to put UIU up 1-0 at the 1:27 mark. Then, with ten minutes left in the first half Leandro Pena scored to put the Peacocks up 2-0. The senior from Lavras, Brazil netted his third goal of the year by taking a Lions mistake and ripping a shot from inside the box.

The Lions chipped into the lead with 18 minutes into the second half, but UIU was able to hold on for the win despite playing a man down for the final five minutes.

Upper Iowa will play at Fort Hays State on November 7 for the final match of the year. It will likely have conference championship and NCAA Central Region implications as the Tigers currently sit atop the regional rankings and are 3-1-1 in the MIAA with three games remaining in conference play. That game will kickoff at 5 p.m. under the lights in Hays, Kansas.
