The Peacocks women's soccer team fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs scored seven minutes into the game and the Peacocks couldn't solve the puzzle of the SMSU defense over the final 83 minutes. With the loss, UIU moves to 6-5-2 and 5-4-1 in NSIC play, while the win moves Southwest Minnesota State an even 6-6-1 and 6-4 in conference play.
SMSU scored on the first shot of the game, taking a 1-0 lead just 6:42 into the opening half. UIU put the next two shots on goal, but both were saved by the Mustang goalkeeper and the Peacocks went into the halftime break down by a goal.
The Peacocks had four shots on goal in the second half, but the SMSU defense was up to the task and held UIU scoreless for just the second time this season.
Madie Edwards led UIU with three shots on goal, while
Kaitlyn Emanuel made seven saves in net for the Peacocks.
Upper Iowa returns to action when they hit the pitch against the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sunday at 1 p.m.
