Peacocks Slay the Dragon; Edwards Scores Three

Upper Iowa 6, MSU Moorhead 0 - The Peacocks pour it on with five goals in the first half on their way to a 6-0 shutout victory.

The Peacocks women's soccer (6-4-2, 5-3-1 NSIC) team exploded for six goals, including five in the first half, in a 6-0 win over the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons (1-7-3, 1-7-1 NSIC) on Sunday. Senior Madie Edwards had a hat trick, scoring UIU's first, second and sixth goals. She has now scored in four straight games and in six of the last seven for Upper Iowa, including five over the weekend. Edwards now has 13 goals this season, which leads the NSIC.

Upper Iowa's offensive assault started from the get-go, with Edwards scoring less than eight minutes into the match. Four minutes later, Edwards buried her second goal of the game and put UIU up 2-0. Two minutes later, the Peacocks got on the board again as Mackenzie Taldone got her head on a Nicole Poirier corner kick to push the Peacock lead to 3-0 less than 15 minutes into the match.

At the 20:47 mark, Lauren Sharp ripped a shot from outside the box that sailed over the Dragon goalkeepers reach and into the side netting just inside the far post. Five minutes later, UIU made it 5-0 when Savannah Schinto finished a Gina Britton pass from inside the box.

Then, in the final ten minutes of the match, Edwards was able to bury a shot off a Peacock corner kick to score the sixth and final goal of the game.

Edwards led all players with seven points, adding an assist to her three goals, while Sharp has three points with a goal and an assist. Jordyn Ostrowski and Britton had two assists each, while Brianne Fenton and Poirier had one assist each. Kaitlyn Emanuel made seven saves in a clean sheet, but was largely untested on the day.

The Peacocks head out on the road for a pair of conference games next weekend, playing at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Oct. 17, and at Sioux Falls on Sunday, Oct. 18. Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
