No. 14 Peacocks Vanquish V-Hawks, 4-0

UIU scored two goals in each half and had four different players find the back of the net.

The No. 14 Upper Iowa men's soccer team bounced back from a pair of one-goal losses in their last two games to beat the Viterbo V-Hawks 4-0 in a non-conference match on Sunday. UIU scored two goals in each half and had four different players find the back of the net. With the win, the Peacocks improved to 8-2-1, while the loss drops Viterbo to 5-8-1.

Upper Iowa controlled the pace of play throughout the match and set team-highs in goals (4), shots (31), shots on goal (12) and corner kicks (14) in the game as the majority of the match was played on the Peacocks' offensive end. The game could have been even more lop-sided had the Peacocks converted a pair penalty kicks that were saved by the Viterbo goalkeeper.

The Peacocks offensive pressure reached the breaking point 30 minutes into the match when Jared Newman stole a ball deep in the V-Hawk defensive end and ripped a shot that beat the VU goalkeeper to the far post to give UIU a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Johnny McBeth and Gabriel Caetano worked a give-and-go through the middle of the Viterbo defense, with McBeth finishing in the box with his left foot to put the Peacocks up 2-0.

Midway through the second half, UIU scored a pair of goals in 37 seconds when Ryan Pinkerton and Blair Lyons each used some good footwork to get through the V-Hawk defense and score. Rhys Williams picked up an assist on Pinkerton's goal.

Caetano led the Peacock attack with seven shots, while Ludin Gonzales made one save for his first career win and shutout in goal for UIU.

The Peacocks continue with non-conference play this week as they host the University of Illinois Springfield on Wednesday, Oct. 14, before heading to Springfield, Ill. for a neutral site match against Oakland City University.
