Peacocks Post Fourth Straight NSIC Victory

Upper Iowa 30 - Southwest Minnesota State 9. The #10 Peacock wrestling team won eight of the ten matches in Marshall, Minn. on Friday night highlighted by a pin from Blake Sorensen and three major decisions.

The Peacock wrestling team, ranked #10 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll, won eight of their ten matches against Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. on Friday night.  Upper Iowa defeated the Mustangs 30-9 thanks to a win by fall and three major decisions on the night.  UIU is now 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Northern Sun Conference.
 
Garrett Wangsness got things started for the Peacocks with a 6-0 decision at 125 pounds and Matt Paulus followed with an 8-0 major decision at 133 pounds.  Jordan Roths worked through his 141 pound match for a 4-0 decision, while Trevor Duke won his third straight match with a 7-2 decision at 149 pounds.  Jordan Rinken (#6 NWCA) capped off the first half of the dual with a 12-2 major decision at 157 pounds giving Upper Iowa a 17-0 lead.
 
Southwest Minnesota State got their first win of the night at 165 pounds when Jacob Begin picked up a 7-3 decision over Colbey Vance (#8 NWCA).  UIU bounced back with a major decision at 174 as Dalton Westerlund (pictured above) earned a 9-1 victory.  Blake Sorensen (#6 NWCA) put a stamp on the evening with a win by fall at 184 pounds in just over a minute (1:03).  The Peacocks' final win came at 197 pounds when Ricky Briggs recorded a 4-0 win.  The Mustangs claimed the final bout at heavyweight when Cole Wilson pinned Logan Hopp in the first sudden victory period (7:55).  The match had gone to overtime tied at 1-1.
 
The Peacocks will return home to Fayette and take a day to recover and then take to the mat in Dorman Gym on Sunday.  Upper Iowa will celebrate Alumni Day prior to the team's NSIC dual against Minot State University, which begins at 2 p.m.
