For the third consecutive game, Upper Iowa surpassed the 100-point mark, albeit this time in double overtime as the Peacocks defeated the Beavers of Minot State 107-101.
Grant Lang scored a career-high 31 points to lead a quintet of Peacocks in double figures.
Â
Lang hit his fifth trifecta of the game with 2:55 remaining in the second half to put Upper Iowa up by six, 81-75. The Beavers battled back with a 9-2 run and took the lead, 84-83. A
Bo Pagel layup put the Peacocks back in front 85-84, followed by
Jordan Hay going 1-of-2 from the free throw line, making it 86-84 with just 41 seconds left. Minot State again rallied, hitting a go-ahead three with 21 seconds remaining. Pagel was fouled on the ensuing possession and he converted on his second of two free throws, tying the game at 87-87. Minot had a shot at the buzzer, but missed as this game was meant for overtime.
Â
In the first OT, it was the Beavers who quickly gained control. Minot hit a three on their first possession and added a layup to jump out to an early 92-87 lead. But the Peacocks fought back by getting the ball to the basket.
Jimmy Roth and
Jarrod Gamble got easy buckets on backdoor cuts, bringing UIU within one, 92-91. Following a Minot State turnover, Hay drove to the hoop and dropped in a layup to give Upper Iowa the lead, 93-92, with 1:48 left. After a pair of
Luke Lenhart free throws, UIU was up by three, 95-92. Although, this time it was Minot State's turn to keep this thriller from ending. Michael Pello hit a three pointer with 18 seconds left to tie the game for the fifteenth time, 95-95. Lang missed his deep three point attempt at the buzzer and the game headed for a second overtime.
Â
The second overtime, however, was all Peacocks. After the two teams traded points in their first two possessions, UIU went on a 7-0 run to take control of the game. Minot State made its first field goal attempt of the second OT, but then shot 0-for-6 in the final 4:10. Upper Iowa shot 8-of-12 from the free throw line throughout the overtimes, including 6-for-8 in the second OT, to ice the game after shooting just 13-of-24 during regulation.
Â
Lang shot 11-for-17 to lead UIU, including 5-of-8 from three point range on his way to 31 points and 6 assists. Pagel finished with 17 points, while
