After scoring at will over the past three games, the Peacocks shot a season-low 30% (18-60) from the field in a 69-56 loss to the Marauders of the University of Mary. The Marauders put constant pressure on the Peacock shooters, forcing UIU into tough shots from the outside and a season-low 56 points.
Â
The first half saw both teams shoot the ball well, as Upper Iowa shot 40% (10-25) including five from deep, and Mary shot 50% (14-28) and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Marauders went on a 10-3 run late in the half to take a 35-30 lead with three seconds left. Jimmy Roth got the ball near half court, took a couple dribbles and lofted a prayer that got nothing but net. UIU went to the break down just two.
Â
The Marauders came out in the second half on a mission. Mary scored the first five points of the second half and had stretched their lead to 13 with just over ten minutes left. The Peacocks got three's from Jarrod Gamble and Luke Lenhart as part of a 10-4 run to pull back within seven at the five minute mark.
Â
But that would be as close as UIU would get because the Peacocks couldn't seem to find their range from the floor. In the second half, Upper Iowa shot just 8-for-35 from the floor and 3-of-16 from three point range. ?
Â
Roth led the Peacocks in scoring with 13 points and was the only UIU player in double figures, while Jarrod Gamble grabbed nine rebounds for the second consecutive game.
Â
Mary had four players with 10-plus points and shot 50% from the field as a team. Marquealis Edwards led the Marauders with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Peacocks will hit the road for their next few games. UIU plays at Wayne State on Friday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m., followed by a game at #9 Augustana on Saturday at 6 p.m.
