Peacocks Hit Century Mark, Defeat Cougars With Free Throw Shooting

UIU 100, USF 87 - Upper Iowa got to the 100-point plateau for the second straight game, due in large part to shooting 34-of-42 from the free throw line.

The Peacocks completed the weekend and season sweep of Sioux Falls with a 100-87 victory, scoring 100 points in back-to-back games for the first time in recent history. UIU nearly lost a 20-plus point lead in the second half, but clinched the game by shooting 34-of-42 from the free throw line, including making 13-of-14 down the stretch. The win moves Upper Iowa to 10-6 on the year, 6-4 in the NSIC and 7-1 in Dorman Gym, while the loss drops Sioux Falls to 7-9 and 4-6 in conference.

Upper Iowa started the first half shooting 6-of-6 from beyond the arc, including a 4-for-4 effort from senior guard Grant Lang. Lang's fourth trifecta stretched the UIU lead to 13, but the Peacocks were far from done shooting. UIU finished the half shooting 75-percent (9-12) from three point range and 64-percent (16-25) from the field overall, giving the Peacocks a 52-36 half time lead.

UIU came out in the second half just as hot as they had finished the first, scoring on their first four possessions, including two more threes. Less than two minutes into the latter period, the Peacocks had stretched their lead to 24.

But UIU would cool off midway through the second half and Sioux Falls started slowly chipping away at the lead. With just under three minutes remaining in the game and UIU on a seven-minute stretch without a field goal, the Cougars had worked it back to an 8-point game, 83-75.

Bo Pagel ended the Peacock drought with a runner at the 2:27 mark, putting the Upper Iowa lead back to double digits. It was Pagel's ability to get to the rim and draw fouls that kept the Peacocks comfortably ahead during their shooting dry spell. The Cougar's pressure forced UIU into a couple turnovers, but Upper Iowa was cool from the free throw line down the stretch. The Peacocks made 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the final minute, securing the 100-87 victory.

Pagel led UIU on the night with 23 points and 5 assists, including 14-of-16 shooting from the free throw line. Lang finished with 22 points and 5 rebounds, while Jordan Hay added 16 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.

Upper Iowa will look to continue their hot stretch at home when they host Minot State and the University of Mary next weekend, Jan. 16 and 17. Friday's game will tip at 8 p.m. and Saturday's game will be at 6 p.m. Both games can be seen live on KCRG 9.2.
