Upper Iowa Falls to Iowa Despite Outhitting Hawkeyes

Iowa 8 - Upper Iowa 3

Box Score The Peacock baseball team closed out their 2014 season at Duane Banks Baseball Field in Iowa City on Wednesday night.  Upper Iowa lost an 8-3 decision to the University of Iowa despite outhitting the Hawkeyes 14-12 on the night.  The Peacocks cut an early lead down to just two runs, 4-2, in the sixth but Iowa pushed three runs across in the bottom of the inning to steal back the game's momentum.

Tyler Adams tallied three singles in his five at bats, including one in to lead off the ninth on an 0-2 count, completing his four-year career with Upper Iowa as a career .401 hitter (217 hits – 541 at bats).

Iowa opened the game's scoring with a pair of hits in the first inning.  With runners on the corners and two outs, the Peacocks mishandled an attempt to catch the base runner attempting to steal second and the runner from third was able to trot in.  UIU starter Jake Barron got out of the inning with a strikeout.

UIU's defense put a quick end to the second inning with a smooth double play turned from Luis Ravelo to Cody Heiman to Jose Aguirre.  The Peacocks turned a second ground ball double play in the third inning as Heiman flipped to Mitch Moser who threw a strike to Aguirre.

The Peacock bats tried to get something going in the fourth inning as Alex George reached on a fielding error, but got caught at second when Aguirre hit a floater to shallow centerfield that looked like it might be caught.  Jacob Stenberg singled to put runners on first and second, but the Hawkeyes turned two to squash the threat.

Moser led off the fifth with a single and moved to second on a Ravelo sac bunt, but a pair of strikeouts stranded UIU's shortstop in scoring position.  Martin Valdez cruised through his first three innings of relief allowing just three hits through the third and fourth innings and retiring the side quickly in the fifth.

Eric Cottrell opened the sixth with a single to the hole on the left side.  After a pop up, Aguirre hit a rope near the wall in centerfield where Eric Toole made a superb play to rob the senior of extra bases and a possible rbi.

Iowa used the momentum of the catch heading into the bottom of the sixth.  The Hawkeyes used three straight hits including a two-run homer by Dan Potempa over the left field wall.

The Peacocks strung four hits together to score a pair of runs cutting the gap to 4-2 in the top of the seventh.  John Dobson and Ravelo singled in front of rbi-singles by Adams and Cottrell.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawkeyes stole the momentum right back scoring another three runs on four hits pushing out to a 7-2 lead.

Aguirre doubled to the gap in right center and moved to third when Stenberg singled to centerfield setting up runners on the corners with no outs.  After a pair of strikeouts, Ravelo stood in and delivered a run-scoring single to right prior to the scoring chance ending on a third strikeout in the frame.

The home team pushed the final run of the game across in the eighth without a hit as a Peacock throwing error allowed a run to score after a pair of ground outs.

Adams singled and reached third in the ninth, but was stranded there to end the game.

At the plate, UIU's 14 hits came from eight different hitters including three from Adams and two from Cottrell, Stenberg, Moser and Ravelo.

Barron took the loss (0-4) with two innings of work allowing one run on two hits.  Valdez through four innings allowing three runs on six hits, while Mason Buster was touched for three runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning.  Brett Fanning closed the game out with 1.2 innings allowing an unearned run but no hits.
