Winona State Sweeps Peacocks in 2014 NSIC Finales

Winona State 7 - Upper Iowa 5 || WSU 8 - UIU 4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Warriors used three big innings on the afternoon to claim a pair of Northern Sun Conference contests over the Peacocks.  Winona State put five runs on the board in the first inning of game one and held on for a 7-5 win, while a pair of 3-run frames in the second game led to an 8-4 victory.  With the losses, UIU falls to 11-29 on the year and 4-22 in the NSIC, while WSU improves to 23-20 overall and 20-11 in the conference.

Game One

Tyler Adams opened the first inning with a double down the left field line and came home on a single to left by Jose Aguirre as the Peacocks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Winona State crossed the plate five times in the bottom of the inning though, just as they did in game one on Friday.  The Warriors used six hits to get their 5-1 lead with four of the runs coming with two outs in the inning.  WSU tacked on a run in the second and the third improving the margin to six, 7-1.

In the fourth, Aguirre singled to center and moved to third after back-to-back walks loaded the bases with no outs.  Unfortunately, UIU's lack of production with the bases loaded this season (a below .200 batting average for the squad) showed its face again as a strikeout and a pair of flyouts ended the threat.

Through the first six innings, Upper Iowa was held to just five hits, but in the seventh, Upper Iowa made one final push.  With one out, Adams walked, Cody Booker was hit by a pitch and a fielding error allowed Alex George to reach and once again loaded the bases.  Aguirre delivered an rbi-single to right and Jacob Stenberg followed with an rbi-single to center.  Sam Kortes plated another run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.  Mitch Moser walked with two outs to reload the bases and John Dobson picked up an infield single pulling the Peacocks within two, 7-5.  Unfortunately, the rally ended with a fly ball to right field.

Prior to the big inning, UIU had only registered 10 hits in 52 at bats with the bases loaded, but came through with three hits in seventh frame alone.

Mason Buster (2-6) took the loss with just two innings of work allowing six runs on seven hits, while Matt Meulemans threw well in relief allowing just one run on two hits over his four innings on the mound.

Lucas Crimmins (2-0) earned the victory with four innings of work, while Scott Freiburger picked up his 11th save by finally getting the last out of the seventh despite facing three batters.

At the plate, Aguirre recorded three hits while driving in two runners.

Game Two

After Winona State put the game's first run on the scoreboard in the second inning, Upper Iowa answered with a run to tie in the top of the third.  Cody Heiman led off with a double and scored on an infield single by George.

Winona State retook their slim lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning on a pair of hits.  The Warriors scored three runs in the fourth inning on three hits and a Peacock error to the inning's opening batter.

UIU racked five hits in the sixth inning and scored three runs to climb back into the game, 5-4.  Aguirre, Dobson and Moser opened the inning with a single, and back-to-back doubles to score the first run.  A ground out by Eric Cottrell drove the second run in and left Moser at third with just one out.  Luis Ravelo drove in the third run with a single to center and moved to second on a Heiman single to left.  The inning ended on a double play to keep the Peacocks down one.

The home team shifted the momentum right back into their dugout with a three-run sixth inning to reestablish their four-run lead, 8-4.

Neither team scratched the scoreboard again as UIU dropped their final NSIC game of the season.

Dickson Paz (2-2) took the loss with four innings of work allowing five runs, four were earned, on seven hits while striking out three.  Dan Cwertniak threw two innings of relief and allowed three runs on three hits.  Blake Seehusen kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings giving up just one hit.

Hayden Krimmer (4-3) got the win for Winona State going 5.1 innings allowing the four runs on eight hits.

At the plate, George, Aguirre and Heiman all tallied a pair of hits.
