Concordia Hangs Pair of One-Run Decisions on Upper Iowa

Concordia-St. Paul 2 - Upper Iowa 1 || CU 3 - UIU 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Peacock baseball team lost its fourth and fifth straight games by a single run Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn.   For the second day in a row, the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul defeated Upper Iowa 2-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two.  The single-run losses move UIU's record in those games to 1-10 on the season.  With the losses, the Peacocks fall to 10-24 on the year and 3-17 in the NSIC.  Concordia improves to 25-11 overall and 17-9 in the conference.

Game One

Concordia-St. Paul scored the first two runs of the game in the third and fourth innings and took a 2-0 lead into the fifth.  The Golden Bear run in the third came on a pair of hits, while the fourth-inning score was unearned due to a Peacock error.

In the fifth, Alex George singled to left centerfield scoring Tyler Adams from second base.  Unfortunately, Adams was the last Peacock to reach scoring position over the final innings as CU picked up the 2-1 victory.

Mason Buster threw well again, but suffered the loss dropping his record to 2-5.  The righty allowed just two runs, one was earned, on three hits to the Golden Bears while striking out two.

Adam Kramer earned the complete game victory for Concordia going 7 innings and allowing the run while striking out 6 Peacock batters.

At the plate, UIU collected six hits, two by second baseman Sam Kortes.

Game Two

In the second game, the Peacocks scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead.  The two runs came on just one hit, but were aided by a fielding error and two hit batsmen; the second of which hit Jacob Stenberg and came with the bases loaded.  Cody Booker then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate the second run.

Concordia got one run back in the second inning with a solo homerun to open the frame off Peacock starter Dickson Paz (pictured above).  The Golden Bears took a one-run lead in the third inning scoring two runs on three hits including an rbi-double to left to take a 3-2 lead.

Neither team put another run on the board over the final six innings as the pitchers and defenses took control snuffing out any scoring opportunities for either team.

Paz fell to 2-1 despite going the distance and throwing 8 innings.  He allowed 3 runs on 9 hits while striking out 4 Golden Bears.

At the plate, UIU tallied five hits, six bases on balls and two hit batsmen, but were unable to take advantage of baserunners after the first inning.
