Box Score 2 The Vikings of Augustana College pushed their current win streak to seven straight games with a dominant sweep over the Peacock baseball team on Tuesday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Game OneAugustana was quick to get on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs, but Upper Iowa sent seven batters to the plate in their half of the first and scored three runs on two hits and a walk.
Alex George picked up the first rbi with a fielder's choice before
John Dobson hit a two-run double down the line in right field. The 3-2 lead for the Peacocks was their only lead of the day and it only lasted a few batters.
In the second inning, Augustana tied the game with a run thanks to a leadoff walk and an rbi-single. The contest remained tied until the fourth inning when the Vikings broke free scoring three runs on four hits including three straight doubles; all the runs and hits in the inning came after two quick outs.
Augie added two more in the fifth and sixth innings to post their 10-3 victory. The Peacocks loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but came up empty and were unable to rally.
At the plate,
Ryan Citro and
Luis Ravelo combined for four of UIU's seven hits, while George extended his hitting streak to 11 games. UIU's top hitter
Tyler Adams saw his 29-game hitting streak come to an end.
On the mound,
Jake Barron made his first appearance and start for UIU, but suffered the loss with 3.2 innings of work. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striiking out five batters.
Tanner Funke and
Miguel Helguera saw time in relief with Helguera allowing no runs in his 1.1 innings.
Game TwoThe Vikings struck quickly again in the second game with a run in the first inning and two more in the third before Upper Iowa got on the board in the bottom of the third.
Upper Iowa loaded the bases with one out thanks to a walk and a pair of singles and sent Adams to the plate looking for an answer. Adams pushed one run across the plate with an infield single and left the bases full with one out. Unfortunately the next two batters struck out swinging and could not put the runners in motion as the threat ended quietly.
Augustana took advantage of the missed opportunity and immediately put runs on the board. The Vikings scored two in the fourth and added a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Augie added three more runs in the eighth to take an 11-1 lead and after the Peacock bats came up empty in the bottom of the inning the game was called due to the 10-run rule in NSIC 9-inning games.
Cody Heiman accounted for two of the team's five hits in the batter's box. On the hill,
Mitch Moser took the loss throwing five innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits while striking out five batters. Only
Nic Pierick, one of the four Peacock relievers used, escaped without allowing a run in his inning of work.
Next UpUpper Iowa is scheduled to travel to St. Cloud State University on Thursday, a 4 p.m. start, and Friday, a 1 p.m. start, for a four-game series with the #9 Huskies.
