Peacocks Split with Marauders; Pair of Four-Run Innings Fuel Game Two Win

U-Mary 4 - UIU 3 || UIU 9 UM 3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Peacock baseball team split a pair of games at the University of Mary on Saturday.  UIU lost the first game 4-3 as the home team rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walkoff win with two outs.  In the second game, Upper Iowa used a pair of four-run innings to control the game and win 9-3.  Dickson Paz earned the complete game for UIU improving to 2-0, while Tyler Adams was able to extend his current hitting streak to 29 games with four hits on the day.  UIU is now 9-12 on the year and 2-6 in the NSIC.

Game One

The Marauders held a 2-0 lead after the first four innings thanks to a run in the second and one in the fourth.  The home team marked the scoreboard first when a failed pick off attempt at first allowed a runner from third to cross the plate.  In the fourth, a sac fly brought home a leadoff double for the Marauders.

Upper Iowa rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a one-run lead, 3-2.  Back-to-back singles by Ryan Citro and Cody Booker gave the Peacocks' top hitter an opportunity at the plate.  Tyler Adams delivered with a triple to left centerfield tying the game as both baserunners scored.  Adams came home a few batters later on a Marauder miscue on the infield that allowed the inning to continue.  Upper Iowa looked to pick up another run on a single by Alex George, but a good relay throw to the plate got Jose Aguirre for the final out.

Much like both of Thursday's losses to Northern State University, the home team came from behind for the victory late with a pair of runs in the seventh.  Starter Mason Buster hit the first batter of the inning, but retired the next two thanks to a sac bunt and strikeout.  U-Mary tied the game with two outs though thanks to a triple and two batters later earned the win with a single to left field off Jordan Kearns, who had just come in with runners on the corners.

Buster (1-4) suffered the loss after throwing 6.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits while striking out six.  At the plate, Adams, John Dobson and Citro all had two hits, while Adams picked up the only two rbi's of the game for UIU.

The loss marked the fifth straight and also the fifth straight loss by three runs or less.

Game Two

UIU fell behind 1-0 early in the second game, but shot back with a four-run outburst in the third inning to take a three-run lead.  The big inning was fueled by four hits and a pair of U-Mary errors.  Back-to-back errors allowed the Peacocks to tie the game and left the team with Aguirre on second after an rbi-single.  Sam Kortes doubled to left to send the baserunner home and then scored on a sac fly from Dobson.

U-Mary got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Peacocks were quick to answer with a run of their own in the fourth.  A leadoff double by Citro turned into a run as he advanced to third on a flyout and came home on a wild pitch.

Once again, the Marauders cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but UIU kept the damage minimal.

A four-run sixth inning capped off the scoring for UIU and put the game in the vistior's control.  Adams plated two Peacocks with a double to centerfield, while Mitch Moser hit a sac fly to score another run and Aguirre drove in the final run with a single to left.

The UIU starter Dickson Paz got stronger as the game moved.  He allowed only one hit in his final five innings of work to earn the complete game victory.  Paz allowed six hits over his nine innings while striking out thirteen Marauders.

At the plate, Aguirre tallied three hits, while Adams and George each had two hits.

The victory snapped a five-game slide for UIU.
