Box Score 2 Upper Iowa came up short in a pair of Northern Sun Conference double headers Thursday in Aberdeen, S.D. The Peacocks led Northern State University 5-0 heading to the sixth inning in game one and 4-3 moving to the seventh in game two. The Wolves scored eight runs in the sixth inning to claim game one 8-5 and then scored two runs in the seventh to post a 5-4 win in game two. The losses drop UIU's record to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC, while NSU improves to 17-10 overall and 10-6 in the NSIC.
Game One RecapUpper Iowa took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning needing just six outs to pick up a victory in game one, but the Wolves erupted in their half of the sixth to score eight runs on six hits and one Peacock miscue. A pair of doubles, a single, a three-run homerun and a walk chased starter
Martin Valdez, but UIU still led 5-4. The tying run scored on a single to left and the final three scores for the Wolves came across on a fielding error in the Peacock infield.
The Peacocks couldn't not rally in the seventh and dropped the first game. UIU was first on the scoreboard in the opening inning thanks to an rbi-single off the bat of
Jose Aguirre. The team looked to take control in the fifth inning scoring four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth,
Dickson Paz led off with a single and moved to second when
Ryan Citro singled to left.
Alex George doubled to right to bring home one run and a sac fly by
Luis Ravelo pushed a second run across the plate.
Tyler Adams kept his hit streak alive with a two-run single through the right side to reach 26 straight games.
On the mound,
Martin Valdez got a no-decision after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out four.
Anthony Ruden suffered the loss with just 0.1 innings after allowing three unearned runs on just one hit.
Game Two RecapNorthern State scratched the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the third inning on three hits highlighted by an rbi-double to right centerfield.
Upper Iowa bounced back to take a one-run lead in the top of the fifth thanks to three runs on two hits and a Wolves' error.
Cody Booker drove in the first run of the inning on a sac fly with the bases loaded. Moser plated the second run with a single throught the left side and Adams hit a sac fly to left to push the final run across the plate.
A two-out double by the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 3-3 heading to the sixth.
In the top of the seventh inning, Moser rocked a double to right center that scored Booker, who led the inning off with a walk. The run gave UIU their second straight late inning lead, but NSU once again found a way to reclaim the edge.
After the Wolves first batter of the inning was hit by a pitch, the second reached on an error on the infield setting up runners on first and second with no outs. After a wild pitch pushed two runners into scoring position, a double down the right field line gave the home team a 5-4 lead.
UIU had a shot at tying the game in the eighth after a leadoff single by Jacob Stenberg, but a line drive, double play cleared the bases in front of another double by George. A groundout ended the Peacock threat.
On the mound,
Brett Fanning started and threw five innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three to earn a no-decision. Charley Cunningham took the loss with an inning of relief allowing the pair of scores in the seventh.
At the plate, Moser, George and Stenberg all tallied two hits each, while Adams pushed his hit streak to 27 games with a double with two out in the first inning.
