Game Notes

Upper Iowa || Bemidji State || Northern Sun Conference

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK BASEBALL...  The Peacocks will open their home slate this weekend at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette.  The Beavers of Bemidji State University will challenge UIU in Fayette with a 1 p.m. double header on Saturday and a 12 p.m. double header on Sunday.  The games mark the Northern Sun Conference openers for both teams.  Upper Iowa opened their season with a 3-1 mark at LeMoyne-Owen College before going 4-5 in Clearwater, Fla. over spring break.  The team is anxious to get back on the field after their last six games were cancelled due to weather.

LAST WEEK FOR THE BEAVERS... Bemidji State is on a three-game winning streak improving to 6-7 overall with victories on the road over Avila University and Kansas Wesleyan University.  Against Avila, Tyler Saeugling pitched nine complete innings and fanned eight batters to help guide the Beavers to a 10-3 road victory at Avila University on Mar. 23. Saeugling improved to 2-1, as he scattered seven hits in the nine frames and issued only one walk. The junior pitched five shut-out innings before allowing a single run in the sixth and two runs in the ninth.

KEEP SWINGING THE BATS... The Peacock offense has had a solid start to the season posting a team batting average of .317, which ranks 28th nationally and 5th in the NSIC.  The team's on-base percentage is an even more impressive .413, which is 17th-best in the nation and 4th in the conference.  UIU's slugging percentage of .424 is ranked 41st nationally and 4th highest in the Northern Sun.

BLACK "TY" AFFAIR...  Senior center fielder Tyler Adams has led the Peacocks through the opening 13 games with a .549 batting average.  The lefty's average is second-best nationally and in the conference to Eric Fasnacht of Concordia University, St. Paul, who is hitting .561.  Adams has collected 28 hits already this season while slugging .706 thanks to four doubles and a pair of triples.  The slugging percentage is ranked 21st nationally and 2nd in the NSIC behind his teammate, Jose Aguirre, who has a .774 slugging percentage.  Adams is also ranked 3rd nationally in on-base percentage (.593), 26th in runs per game (1.23) and 62nd in triples (2).  Adams carries a .410 career batting average heading into the weekend with 178 hits over his three-plus seasons with UIU.

NO WAY "JOSE"... Senior Jose Aguirre has been denying pitchers their rights to get him out over the first 13 games of the season.  Aguirre, who splits time between roles as the Peacock catcher and designated hitter, has the 11th best batting average in the nation at .484 (4th in NSIC), the country's 2nd-best on-base percentage (.595) and the nation's 7th highest slugging percentage (.774).  Aguirre's hot start also has him ranked nationally in bases on balls per game (33rd), home runs per game (57) and runs per game (59).
