Upper Iowa (3-1) || LeMoyne-Owen (1-8)
Recap
The Peacock baseball team improved to 3-1 on the season thanks to a double header sweep in Memphis, Tenn. against the host Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College. Upper Iowa won game one , 8-6, and backed it up with a 10-6 victory in the series finale.
Game One
Upper Iowa scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings of Sunday's opener. The runs in the first and second gave the visitor's a 4-0 lead before LeMoyne-Owen put a run on the board.
Tyler Adams and
Dickson Paz each had rbi-singles in the first inning and UIU could have done more damage, but left the bases loaded. In the second,
John Dobson and Paz tallied run-scoring singles with two outs to give the Peacocks a 4-0 lead.
After the Magicians scored a run in the bottom of the second, UIU's
Jacob Greco drove in two runners with a single extending UIU's lead to 6-1. The Peacocks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on a
Jose Aguirre solo homerun and in the sixth on Paz's third rbi-single of the game.
The Magicians put together a rally in the sixth with a pair of runs on four hits and one Peacock error and then scored three runs in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, before Upper Iowa finally shut the door on the threat to win 8-6.
Paz was solid in just his third game on the field for Upper Iowa. Along with his three rbi-singles, he earned the victory on the mound. He started and threw six innings allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits while striking out three batters.
Adams also had a multi-hit game with two singles,while six other UIU players tallied at least one hit in the game.
Game Two
After falling behind 4-0 in the early innings of the series finale, Upper Iowa stormed back in the top of the third inning scoring six runs on four hits. The team was also helped out by two miscues by the Magicians.
In the third,
Luis Ravelo, Adams, Dobson, Paz,
Alex George and
Ryan Citro all drove a run across home plate in the inning. Only two of the six runs to score were earned, but UIU took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the third.
A run-scoring double in the fourth by Ravelo and a Magician error in the fifth added two runs to the Peacocks' tally giving them an 8-4 lead.
In the seventh, both teams scored two runs to set the final score at 10-6. UIU's two runs came on a rbi-double by George and a throw from the LOC catcher that got away into the outfield allowing
Jimmy Pinakidis to come all the way home from second.
Anthony Ruden came on in relief for the win. Ruden threw five innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters.
Adams was perfect at the plate recording four singles in his four at bats. Ravelo, George and Citro all joined Adams with multiple hits in the games.

Upper Iowa will now have a couple weeks to prepare for the Clearwater Baseball Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
