Recap

The Peacock baseball team opened their season in Memphis, Tenn. Saturday afternoon against the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians. The home team claimed a 7-4 decision in game one, but Upper Iowa salvaged a split thanks to a 6-1 win in game two.

Game One

LeMoyne-Owen put a run on the scoreboard in the second and added two more in the third. In the fourth, the Magicians blew the game open with four runs in the fourth. Upper Iowa began their rally in the fifth inning when Mitch Moser led off the frame with a homerun to left, the bomb was his first collegiate hit. Jacob Greco doubled and came home on a two-run single by John Dobson. In the seventh, Dobson doubled home another run to pull the Peacocks within three. UIU loaded the bases and put the tying run on first, but a strikeout ended the threat and gave the Magicians the victory.

Martin Valdez took the loss throwing 7 innings and allowing 7 runs on 6 hits. The lefty was a victim of 4 Peacock miscues in the field, three of which came in the fourth inning, in the team's first action outside since practices last fall. Only one of the runs allowed by Valdez was earned as he added six strikeouts.

Game Two

Upper Iowa wasted little time scratching the scoreboard in game two. The Peacocks put a pair of runs up in the first thanks to an rbi-single from Tyler Adams and a bases loaded walk by Ryan Citro. Le-Moyne Owen answered with their only run of the game in the first, but UIU retook their two-run advantage in the top of the second. Jimmy Pinakidis singled in Luis Ravelo in the fourth and the team added their final two runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-1.

Mason Buster made his first collegiate start for the Peacocks and threw seven innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six.
