THIS WEEKEND IN MEN'S BASKETBALL Â
The Peacocks are off to a 1-1 start after beating Fort Hays State and losing to Northwest Missouri State last weekend. UIU now opens home schedule when they host in-state NAIA foe Waldorf College. This will be the first time the Peacocks have played Waldorf since moving to Division II prior to the 2006 school year. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KCRG channel 9.2.
Â
KEY NOTES TO CONSIDERÂ
1Â Â Â Â RETURNING THE FAVOR:Â Upper Iowa returns three starters and three key contributors from last year's team that went 16-14 and 13-9 in conference play. Those returning players accounted for 66.7% of the total minutes played from last year's squad and 67.3% of last year's scoring.
Â
2Â Â Â Â SCORER'S DELIGHT:Â The Peacocks finished the 2013-14 season as the number three scoring offense in the conference, averaging 83.5 points per game. This season, UIU has picked up right where it left off, scoring an average of 84.5 points in the first two games.
Â
3Â Â Â Â THREE'S COMPANY:Â UIU was second in the NSIC in three point field goals made per game last season and the Peacocks return their top five outside sharpshooters. Grant Lang led Upper Iowa in 2013-14 with 73 made trifectas and shot 44% from deep, while Josh Weeber was second with 59 three point baskets at a 40.7% conversion rate. This year, Lang has started the year 4-of-10 and Weeber is 5-of-13 from deep. New additions Carson Parker (3-for-6) and Jarrod Gamble (3-of-5) have helped spread the three point threats across the floor.
Â
4Â Â Â Â HANNA-BAL:Â Sophomore guard Jace Hanna scored in double digits just once in the 2013-14 season, but has started this year with back-to-back double figure scoring efforts. Hanna also recorded the first double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) for the Peacocks against Northwest Missouri State since Tucker Wentzien did it on Mar. 1, 2013.
Â
5 Â Â Â WEEBER AT IT AGAIN:Â Sophomore forward Josh Weeber has reached double digits in points in both games this season. Weeber has now been in double figures in 9 of his last 10 games dating back to last season, when he ended the year scoring in double figures in seven of eight. He's averaged 15.2 points over that span and is at 15.0 in two games this year.
Â
THE SERIES...VS WALDORF:Â UIU has not played Waldorf since moving up to NCAA Division II.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT...Â
WALDORF:Â The Warriors were picked to finish second in the MCAC this season behind 2013-14 champ Bellevue. Waldorf is coming off of a 16-10 season, which set a school-record for wins since the Warriors moved to NAIA competition. Despite being just 2-5 to start the year, the Warriors are currently receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll. Waldorf's first win of the year was against NAIA preseason #2 Cardinal Stritch University. The Warriors then lost four straight, but ended their losing streak when they defeated Judson College in their most recent game on Nov. 15.Â
