Men's Soccer Faces Road Test Against Ranked Opponents

UIU travels to take on #24 Fort Hays State and #15 Northeastern State this week

LIVE STATS: Fort Hays State || Northeastern State
WEBCAST:  Fort Hays State

This week in Peacock men's soccer… Upper Iowa (6-3-1) caps off a six-game road trip with a pair of MIAA matches. The week begins with a battle against the #24 Fort Hays State Tigers on Thursday at 5 p.m. and ends with a game against the #15 Northeastern State RiverHawks on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Tigers of Fort Hays State are 6-3-1 this season, with two of their three losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. Upper Iowa has yet to face Fort Hays State this season, but is 0-3 all-time against the Tigers, including one goal losses in 2013 (2-1) and 2012 (3-2). The Northeastern State RiverHawks are 8-2 in 2014 and are currently on a six-game winning streak. That stretch of games includes a 3-2 overtime victory over the Peacocks in Fayette, Iowa, on Sept. 20. UIU is 0-3 against NSU since joining the MIAA prior to the 2012 season.

Lightning Leandro... After leading the Peacocks in points, goals and assists last season, junior midfielder Leandro Pena had been held without a point in 2014 until game number seven. However, over the previous four games, Pena has three goals, including two game-winners. Pena is also tied for the team lead in shots (22) and shots on goal (13).

Ole Ole Ole... The Peacocks have scored in all 10 games to start the 2014 season, and in 18 straight dating back to last year. Under Head Coach Jason Carlson, the Peacocks have scored at least one goal in 26 of 27 games, with the one without a goal ending in a 0-0 tie against Lindenwood. Last season's Peacocks set a new school record for goals in a season with 39 and this year's squad isn't too far behind that pace.

Road, Sweet Road... The Peacocks are off to a 4-1 start in road matches this season. A win this week would secure the Peacocks first winning record away from Fayette in a season since 2010, when UIU was 4-3-1 in road games. A victory this week would also match the Peacocks road win total (5) from the past three seasons.

Last week for the Tigers Fort Hayes State won both of their games last week and have now won four in a row. During that stretch, the Tigers have outscored opponents 18-0. Last week started with a 1-0 win over West Texas A&M in a non-conference match. The Tigers got on the board midway through the second half and cruised to victory. Then Fort Hayes State returned to conference play, defeating Harding 4-0, thanks to four second half goals.

Last week for the RiverHawks Northeastern State played just one game last week, winning to bring their current win streak to six. The RiverHawks defeated Lindenwood, 1-0, snapping the Lions 22-match unbeaten streak. Northeastern State scored midway through the first half in a physical battle that saw six yellow cards and a red card, and held on for the victory.
