Upper Iowa capped off Senior Weekend with its ninth straight win, 4-0, over Sioux Falls. The win also gave the 2014 senior class their 48th win, tying the 2013 class for the most in a four-year span.
"All six of our seniors did a great job this weekend," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "They all played really well and showed why they are the most successful class in the history of the program."
UIU took control of the game early, scoring just 4 minutes into the first half.
Trina Gallagher passed the ball up to
Lauren Rohrmeier on the right side of the field and Rohrmeier took the ball down to the corner. She cut back and made a quick pass into the box where
Madie Edwards was open and waiting. Edwards took a quick shot and beat the Cougar goalkeeper to the near post.
The remainder of the half was controlled by the Peacocks, but battling against the wind made it tough for UIU to score and the game went into the half 1-0.
The Peacocks continued to control the pace of play and put the game away in the second half with three goals in a 12-minute span.
The first came at 57:11 when
Morgan Springborn took a pass at the top of the box and ripped a shot past the charging goalkeeper. Then at 61:53, the ball bounced to Edwards off of a blocked Peacock shot and she buried her second goal of the game. Just seven minutes later,
Aimee Wronski put the Peacocks up 4-0 off a pass from
Kali Loescher to close out the game's scoring.
Caila Petrie made her first career start in goal, making two saves and earning a shutout. The Peacocks tied a season-high with 29 shots, outshooting the Cougars 29-7. Aimee Wronski and Springborn had seven shots each to lead UIU.
"Caila played really well today," said Diaz. "She was clean with everything. We've known all along that she's a really good goalkeeper and we have full confidence in her when we go to her. Today was one of those days and she stepped up and handled everything well."
"I'm just proud of the weekend alltogether," said Diaz. "From a complete performance on Saturday to just getting after it and overwhelming Sioux Falls today, it was a very good weekend."
The Peacocks will hit the road next week for a pair of NSIC matches, starting with Bemidji State on Friday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. UIU wraps up the weekend at Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
