For the first time in 2014, the Peacocks (9-4-1, 9-2-1 NSIC) went to overtime, but ended up tied with Minnesota Crookston (6-5-4, 5-4-3 NSIC) 0-0 to continue their unbeaten streak, which now sits at ten.
"Credit to Minnesota Crookston," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "They had a great gameplan to slow us down and they executed it today."
In a defensive battle, the first half saw four total shots, three for Minnesota Crookston and one for Upper Iowa. The Peacocks best chance came on a
Mackenzie Taldone header that was saved by the UMC goalkeeper.
The second half was a different story. UIU applied the offensive pressure they had become accustomed to during their nine-game win streak, where they had outscored opponents 26-3. Upper Iowa racked up nine shots compared to Minnesota Crookston's one in the second half. The Peacocks nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 78th minute when Aimee Wronski took a shot that hit the cross bar, but UIU wouldn't break through and the game headed for overtime.
In overtime, each team had one shot, but neither team could muster a goal. The Peacocks had four corner kicks, but all came up empty and the game ended in a tie.
"
Morgan Springborn and
Lauren Rohrmeier had exceptional games up top," said Diaz. "Both of them played really well and created opportunities for us. We controlled the tempo, but unfortunately we were just unable to break them down."
UIU put six of eleven shots on goal, while the Golden Eagles managed three shots on goal on five total shots. Rohrmeier led the Peacocks in shots with three, while
Aimee Wronski,
Madie Edwards and
Nicole Poirier had two shots each.
Kaitlyn Emanuel made three saves in net and earned her fifth shutout of the year.
"Our backline played really well," said Diaz. "We didn't give up any dangerous opportunities and locked them down defensively. We came here wanting three points and played well enough to win. Now, we have to shift our focus to Sunday and keep sticking to the process. We won't dwell on this game, but we will learn from it and move forward."
Up next for the Peacocks is a match on Sunday at Bemidji State. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. You can
