The Peacock men's soccer team dropped the 2013 series finale with Mt. Mercy today 3-2 in Cedar Rapids. Upper Iowa took the first contest in Fayette, 4-2, on Sept. 13 thanks to a second-half rally that saw UIU score three unanswered goals. Today though, Mt. Mercy jumped out to a sizeable lead, 3-0, and the hole was too deep for the visitors to climb out of.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a strike from Marco Fichtner in the 15
th minute. Mt. Mercy outshot Upper Iowa 12-5 in the first half.
In the second half, the home team expanded their leads with goals in the 48
th minute by Filip Kovacevic and in the 57
th minute by Josip Druzijanic to claim a 3-0 lead.
Upper Iowa began to crawl back into the match with a goal by
Aaron Calkins in the 67
th minute and then made the match interesting just two minutes later. In the 69
th minute,
Jared Newman finished an assist from
Samuel Vivas to pull the Peacocks within one goal, 3-2. UIU had their chances, but couldn't find the back of the net for the equalizer.
In the second half, the Peacocks earned 9 corner kicks as they mounted their comeback. Mt. Mercy still outshot UIU in the second frame, 13-10.

Next Up
The Peacocks will open their campaign in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, or MIAA, this weekend. Upper Iowa will host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University on Friday at 1 p.m. and then welcome the Lions of Lindenwood University on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played on Pattison Field in Fayette.
