The starting pitchers of Concordia University, St. Paul, Adam Kramer and Andy Fagely, silenced the third-best hitting team in the NSIC today at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. The Golden Bears came away with a pair of complete games from their hurlers in 5-0 and 2-1 decisions.
The Peacock pitchers were nearly as good on the hill, but Concordia (18-14, 11-7 NSIC) scored four runs in the final inning of game one to pull away and then made their two runs in the first inning of game two hold up over the final eight frames.
The 2-1 loss in game two marked the tenth time this season that Upper Iowa (14-23, 6-14 NSIC) has lost a game by two runs or less and eighth time by a single run. The Peacocks tallied just 10 hits on the day; three by
Tyler Adams and two from
Cody Heiman and
Jimmy Pinakidis.
The Peacocks will close out their 2013 season tomorrow in Fayette. UIU and CU will return to Robertson Woods Field for one final double header. Upper Iowa will honor seven seniors between games; start time for the twin bill is set for 12 p.m.
Game One Recap
The Golden Bears took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a leadoff homerun by Trevon Bargfrede and loaded the bases with just one out, but Peacock starter
Martin Valdez worked out of the jam without allowing any more damage.
Upper Iowa threatened in the third inning loading the bases with two outs thanks to singles by Heiman and Adams and a walk to
Mikey Henrichs; the Golden Bears’ starter Adam Kramer ended the threat with a strikeout.
After a rain delay of 40 minutes, the game resumed in the top of the fifth.
Concordia put four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh pulling out to a 5-0 lead. The runs were all charged to Valdez after allowing four hits through the first two outs of the inning when he was lifted. Paul Giel and Drew Turk both came up with two-run singles to account for the runs.
UIU came up empty in the seventh as Adam Kramer (6-1) earned the complete game shutout holding the Peacocks to just four hits while striking out six.
Valdez (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after throwing 6.2 innings and allowing five runs, four were earned, on 10 hits despite striking out 8 Golden Bears.
Heiman tallied two of the Peacocks’ four hits against Kramer. Adams and Kraus picked up the other two singles.
Game Two Recap
After Concordia used three hits and a walk in the top half of the first to score a pair of runs, Upper Iowa answered with a run to cut the gap heading into the second inning.
Adams led the game off with double down the left field line, moved to third on a Heiman ground out and scored on an rbi-ground out by Henrichs.
Concordia put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the fifth, but Anderson bore down and got a Golden Bear looking at the plate to escape the jam.
Anderson left the game with one out in the seventh. He battled through the first seven innings stranding eight Golden Bears on the base paths and shutting out the CU offense after the first inning.
Rory Kolo relieved the Peacock southpaw and inherited two runners. Kolo induced an inning-ending double play by
Ryan Citro at shortstop.
Pinakidis opened the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle and moved to second on Citro’s second sacrifice bunt of the game. With two outs, Upper Iowa turned to a pinch hitter, but Andy Fagely, Concordia’s starter, was up to the challenge throwing a breaking ball past Krick to strand Pinakidis at second.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth, Upper Iowa came to the plate with their last at bats looking for some offense, but once again Fagely shutdown the Peacocks in order giving the Golden Bears the 2-1 win.
Fagely threw nine innings allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five to improve to 4-3 on the season. Anderson fell to 5-3 this year allowing his two runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out three. Kolo was perfect in his 1.2 innings including one strikeout.
At the plate, Pinakidis and Adams each picked up two hits.
