The Peacocks (14-21, 6-12 NSIC) split a pair of games at Wayne State College on Thursday in Wayne, Neb. Upper Iowa picked up a 9-6 win in game one before the Wildcats bounced back with a 12-2 win in 8 innings in game two.
UIU tallied 15 hits including three doubles off the bats of
Andrew Kraus,
Eric Anderson and
Ryan Citro to earn the victory.
Mitch Luebbe evened his record at 1-1 with the win after allowing four runs on six hits in his four innings of work. Jacob Stenberg got the save for UIU with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. UIU handed Tadd Johansen only his second loss of the season touching up the Wildcat ace for 8 runs on 12 hits. Seven Peacocks recorded two hits in the game.
The Peacocks wasted no time scratching the scoreboard in game one.
Tyler Adams reached base with a single down the left field line. Two outs later, Adams stood at second base, when
Andrew Kraus gave Upper Iowa the lead by knocking a hit into left field to bring around the speedy Adams.
After Wayne State tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first, the Peacocks regained their lead in their half of the third thanks to some big hits. With one out in the inning,
Mikey Henrichs hit a ball right back where it came from up the middle.
John Dobson then stepped in to take his hacks with two outs. Dobson continued his hot-hitting with a single to right field to put runners on first and second for
Eric Anderson. The Inglewood, Cal. native pulled a ball into right field for a double that pushed across Henrichs and moved Dobson all the way to third.
William Loza singled up the middle to bring in both Dobson and Anderson giving UIU a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third,
Mitch Luebbe got the first two batters to ground out. Luebbe then gave the next batter a free pass; he stole second and came around to score on an rbi-single cutting Upper Iowa’s lead to two, 4-2.
For the Wildcats in their half of the fourth, the first two batters reached on back-to-back singles before moving over on a sacrifice bunt. After a wild pitch, a run scored and another came home on an RBI single to tie the score at 4-4.
Upper Iowa exploded back into the lead thanks to four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. The three biggest hits of the inning came on a
John Dobson rbi-single to left, an
Eric Anderson run-scoring single through the right side and a double to left by
Ryan Citro that scored two runs.
Following the Wildcats’ one-run answer in the fifth inning, the Peacocks scored their final run in the sixth on a Dobson groundout, after UIU had put runners on second and third with no outs.
In game two, the Peacocks were held to just two runs on five hits, while the Wildcats jumped on the UIU's pitchers. WSC took a 7-2 lead after the first three innings en route to a 12-2 win.
Trailing 1-0 after an inning, Upper Iowa scored two runs in the top of the second. A wild pitch allowed one run to score, while the second run scored on a
Ryan Citro single to right.
Wayne State answered quickly with two runs in the second and added four more in third taking a 7-2 lead. The Wildcat offense kept chugging along posting two runs in the fifth and adding one in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Tyler Wright made his first collegiate appearance on the hill today and was saddled with the loss. He threw 1.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs.
Upper Iowa is scheduled to close out the regular season this Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, against the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul at home in Fayette. The Peacocks will recognize their seniors between games on Sunday.
