This Week in Peacock Baseball... The Peacocks, who boast the 35th highest team batting average (.314) in the country, will look to make one final push for a berth into the NSIC postseason this week. On Thursday, UIU will play the Wildcats of Wayne State in Wayne, Neb. at 2 p.m. in a pair of NSIC battles. The midweek games were originally scheduled for Wednesday, but moved back a day due to rain. The weekend series with the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul have also been pushed back due to weather predicted for Friday. The teams will now meet on Robertson Woods Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. for a pair of twin bills that will end the regular season.
Cali “5-0”... Martin Valdez, a native of Baldwin Park, Calif., has led the UIU pitching staff this spring posting a 5-0 record with an earned run average of 1.72, which is 3rd in the conference and 30th in the country. The junior has struck out 51 batters and is holding opposing batters to a .207 average, the 4th lowest in the conference. The 35 hits he’s allowed are tied for 6th best and the 6.7 per game are 49th in the nation. He has also allowed the 3rd fewest runs (10) in the NSIC. Valdez has thrown the most innings per game (6.71) among NSIC hurlers and has fanned the 7th most batters including 9.77 per nine innings, which is 46th in the country.
“Mike” Check... Mikey Henrichs has been getting people’s attention this season. The Hartford, Iowa native is 21st among all of NCAA Division II and 3rd in the NSIC with a .414 batting average. On the season, Henrichs has 48 hits (T-5th NSIC) including 9 doubles, a triple and four homers to slug .612, which is 6th best in the NSIC and ranks 59th in the country. His 1.45 hits per game are tied for 2nd in the conference with teammate Tyler Adams. UIU’s third basemen is also 12th in the nation and leading the NSIC in on-base percentage at .518 thanks to his hits and 19 walks, tied for the 4th most free passes in the NSIC. The senior is leading the UIU offense with 30 runs batted in and 31 runs scored.
The Fifth Element... Tyler Adams is hitting .390 this season which ranks 6th in the NSIC and 76th nationally. His 48 hits are the 5th highest tally in the conference, while the junior is averaging 1.45 hits per game, 2nd in the NSIC with teammate Mikey Henrichs. The Onalaska, Wis. native’s .490 on-base percentage is 3rd in the Northern Sun and 45th among the Division II ranks. Adams leads the NSIC in walks with 23.
Here’s “John”-ny!... John Dobson is having an impressive spring for UIU. The junior first baseman is hitting .377, the 9th highest average in the NSIC. He has tallied 43 hits including three doubles and a homerun. The Waukesha, Wis. native is slugging .430 and has driven in 19 runs while crossing the plate 15 times.
Big “Will”-ie Style... Senior catcher Will Loza has been solid at the plate this spring. The 5-6 backstop for the Peacocks is hitting .364 on the year with 24 hits including a pair of doubles. Behind the plate, Loza has thrown out five baserunners looking to swipe a bag.
