Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Peacocks took on the Warriors of Winona State Sunday afternoon and the late innings proved to be costly for UIU. Trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning of game one, UIU stormed back with seven runs and five hits to recapture the lead in the bottom of the fifth. However, Winona State (18-13, 12-5) would score a run in each of the final two innings and claim an 8-7 win. In game two, Upper Iowa (13-20, 5-11) captured the lead, 3-0, early in the game.
Tanner Funke went the distance on the hill for UIU, but could not get enough run support for the win. The Warriors scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish. UIU had chances in the later frames on the series finale, but could not score the game-tying run. Upper Iowa has now lost 9 games this season by two runs or less including seven by one run.
Dylan Frederick picked up the win in game one tossing one inning of shutout ball. In the second game it was Jay Voter who went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out two Peacocks. For UIU,
Rory Kolo took the loss in game one to drop to 1-6 on the year, while Funke is still looking for that first win of the year dropping to 0-4.
The Peacocks will return to action this Wednesday, May 1 in Wayne, Neb. against the Wildcats of Wayne State College. UIU will then return home this weekend, May 3-4, for the final games of the regular season as they host the Golden Bears of Concordia University-St. Paul.
Game One Recap
UIU loaded the bases in the second inning with no outs as they looked to put a mark on the scoreboard first, but a line drive double play ended the threat without a Peacock crossing the plate.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors jumped on the board with four runs on five hits including four singles and a double. Starter Dan Cwertniak, who had cruised through the first three innings allowing just two hits, left after the fourth inning.
Winona State added two more runs in the top of the fifth off reliever Jacob Stenberg thanks to a sac fly and an rbi-double giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.
Upper Iowa dug down in the fifth inning and came up with a tremendous rally that gave them a one-run lead when all was said and done. Five Peacock hits and a pair of Warrior errors allowed the seven runs to score. Highlighting the action at the plate for UIU was a two-run double by
Andrew Kraus, an rbi-ground out by
Ryan Citro and a two-out, two-run single off the bat of
Jimmy Pinakidis.
A home run in the sixth off Kolo tied the score at seven and a leadoff walk in the seventh came around to score with two outs on a single through the left side.
Trailing 8-7, the Peacocks got a leadoff single by
Will Loza and after a pair of outs had a runner in scoring position at second. The final out was made on a flyout to left that gave Winona State the one-run victory.
At the plate, UIU got two hits from Adams,
Eric Anderson and Loza, while Pinakidis and Kraus picked up two rbi’s apiece.
On the hill, Kolo suffered the loss after throwing two innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two.
Game Two Recap
Funke, who has struggled in his appearances for UIU since starting against the University of Tampa in Florida at the beginning of March, showed his stuff in Fayette today. Funke threw all nine innings to earn the complete game allowing 10 hits and four runs, three were earned, while walking five and striking out four.
Unfortunately for Funke and the Peacocks, Jay Voter of WSU was just slightly better. Voter threw seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits and Scott Freiburger recorded his second save of the season throwing the final two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Sam Kortes scored the Peacocks’ first run after singling through the right side in the first inning. He scored on a
Mikey Henrichs double to right center.
In the second, UIU added two more runs as
Ryan Citro hit a two-run homer to left field. The longball marked Citro’s second at home this week after recording one against Minnesota Duluth in game one on Wednesday.
Winona State got two runs back in the third inning as a pair of runs scored as UIU was attempting to end the inning on with a double play. A run scored as a result of the double play not being turned and another scored on the ensuing relay throw that got away.
The Warriors tied the game in the fourth with a run and had runners on the corners with just one out, but a pickoff and ground out ended the threat and kept the game knotted at 3-3.
In the fifth, WSU scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run with a pair of back-to back hits; a double and a rbi-single.
UIU looked to answer in the fifth after Adams doubled down the left field line to open the inning. A passed ball with one out allowed the Peacock centerfielder to move to third, but a hard ground out and a strikeout by the number three and four hitters in the order closed out the scoring chance.
For the second time on Sunday afternoon, the game moved to the final half inning and UIU trailing by one. Once again, a leadoff single, this time by
John Dobson, gave the Peacocks a leadoff base runner. But for the second time as well, a sacrifice bunt was popped up in the final inning which did not allow the runner to advance. Loza was then hit by a pitch giving UIU runners on first and second with one out. A flyout to right and strikeout left the tying run 180 feet away and handed the home another tough one-run loss.
At the plate, Dobson had two hits, while Citro provided two rbi’s on his homerun.
