This Week in Peacock Baseball... The Peacocks will return to Robertson Woods Field on Wednesday for the 11th time, but UIU will be the home team on the scoreboard for only the third and fourth times this season. Upper Iowa is hosting a doubleheader with the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday. UIU will line up against the Warriors of Winona State in a home-and-home, four-game series. WSU will host on Saturday and UIU will host on Sunday.
“1-4” the Ages... Martin Valdez (#14) has led the UIU pitching staff this spring posting a 4-0 record and an earned run average of 1.80, which is good for fourth in the conference and 46th in the country. The junior from Baldwin Park, Cal. has struck out 41 batters and is holding opposing batters to a .207 average, the fourth lowest in the conference. The 30 hits he’s allowed are tied for fifth best and 58th in the nation. The 9 runs allowed are tied for third best. He has thrown the most innings per game (6.67) among NSIC hurlers and has fanned the eighth most batters (41).
“Hart” of the Team... Mikey Henrichs, the senior from Hartford, Iowa, is fourth among all of NCAA Division II and second in the NSIC with a .447 batting average. On the season, Henrichs has 42 hits (6th NSIC) including 8 doubles, a triple and three homers to slug .649, which is third best in the NSIC and ranks 29th in the country. His 1.56 hits per game rank first in the conference. UIU’s third basemen is also second in the nation and leading the NSIC in on-base percentage at .602 thanks to his hits and 18 walks, the second most free passes in the NSIC only to his teammate Tyler Adams (22). The senior is leading the UIU offense with 24 runs batted in and 28 runs scored. Henrichs has also swiped 10 of 13 bases, the fifth highest total in the NSIC.
“5” Has Come Alive... This past weekend against Bemidji State,
Tyler Adams (#5) hit .625 (10-16), scored 6 runs, batted in two, and only struck out once. The four-game performance raised his average 42 points from .366 to .408, which is good for fourth in the NSIC and 39th in the nation. The junior is averaging 1.48 hits per game, second in the NSIC behind teammate Mikey Henrichs. The Onalaska, Wis. native’s .521 on-base percentage is second in the Northern Sun and 11th among the Division II ranks. Adams, the NSIC’s leader in walks with 22, is 21st in the nation in walks per game (.81).
“John” 3:91... John Dobson is having an impressive spring for UIU. The junior first baseman is hitting .391, the third highest average on the team, seventh in the NSIC and 75th in the country. He has tallied 36 hits including three doubles and a homerun. The Waukesha, Wis. native is slugging .457 and has driven in 16 runs while crossing the plate 15 times. After spending two years sharing time behind the plate, Dobson has found a home at first defensively for the Peacocks with a .978 fielding percentage. His .462 on-base percentage is the tenth-highest mark in the conference.
