Beavers Sweep Peacocks to Split Weekend Series

Bemidji State 14 - Upper Iowa 3 || BSU 11 - UIU 9 (10)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Beavers of Bemidji State dominated game one and rallied for an extra-inning win in game two earning a sweep of the action on Sunday at Robertson Woods Field.

The Peacocks were the visitors for the games in Fayette after the series was moved south. With the losses, UIU falls to 12-15 overall and 4-6 in NSIC play.

UIU will look to bounce back on Wednesday at home against the University of Minnesota Duluth beginning at 12 p.m.  The games at Robertson Woods Field will be official home games for the Peacocks; the first time UIU will have the last at-bat after eight straight games in Fayette as the visitors.

Game One Recap

Upper Iowa scored three runs in the first inning, but the visitors used two runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 5-3 lead into the middle innings.  Bemidji State blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring nine runs to post the 14-3 victory.

The early runs came on an rbi-single from Andrew Kraus and a two-run single off the bat of John Dobson in the first inning.

After that point, the Bemidji State offense and starting pitcher Jaryd Marks controlled the game.  Marks threw six innings to improve to 3-3 on the season striking out  four Peacocks.

The BSU offense racked up 17 hits to score their 14 runs, only 8 of which were earned thanks to 5 UIU errors.

Rory Kolo (1-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits.  Tanner Funke came on in relief, but was touched for six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings.  Three unearned runs scored on Matt Golden's watch from the hill.  Jordan Kearns was the lone Peacock to work without allowing a run.  He was perfect through the final 1.1 innings.

At the plate, UIU got a pair of hits each from Tyler Adams and Dobson as the Peacocks registered just eight hits in the game.

Game Two Recap

Dobson continued his impressive offensive season with a homerun to left in the second inning to give UIU the first run of game two.

In the third inning, Upper Iowa added three runs thanks to a Kraus sacrifice fly, a Jose Aguirre rbi-double and a Dobson run-scoring single to right.

The Peacocks were able to push their lead to 5-0 with an rbi-single to left off the bat of Aguirre and it looked as if UIU would bounce back to the win column.

Starting pitcher Dan Cwertniak cruised the first four innings allowing no runs and just one hit which came in the fourth inning.

Bemidji State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning fueled by an rbi-double to left centerfield  and a two-run single.

Once again, the Upper Iowa offense answered the challenge and poured another three runs on the scoreboard on a Sam Kortes sacrifice fly and an rbi-single by Kraus, as well as a run thanks to a throwing error.  In total, BSU made three errors in the inning.

With a 8-3 lead, Cwertniak returned to the mound, but the Beavers quickly anwered UIU's runs with three of their own and closed the gap to two, 8-6, heading into the seventh inning.

Bemidji State pulled within one run, 8-7, in the bottom of the eighth with two outs; three straight singles pushed a run across.

In the ninth, Upper Iowa got an insurance run after Eric Anderson doubled to left center with one out and later came home on an Adams single up the middle.  The Peacocks loaded the bases looking to score more, but the threat was squashed by an inning-ending fielder's choice.

In the ninth, BSU loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Jacob Stenberg, who was entering his third inning of work.  After a shallow fly to left, the Beavers scored a run on a walk and then tied the game as a Peacock error came at second base.  UIU was able to work out of the jam without any further damage as shortstop Ryan Citro came home with a ground ball to get the force out and Stenberg picked up a grounder and recorded the out unassisted to end the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, Braun singled with one out, but Aguirre, the UIU catcher, erased him from the paths on a stolen base attempt for the second out.  After a single to right, BSU's Logan Kalis homered to left center to end the game and give Bemidji State the 11-9 extra-inning win.

Nick Tuttle (0-3) took the loss for UIU pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing the two runs on three hits.  Stenberg threw three innings and allowed three runs on six hits, while Cwertniak went six innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out three.

At the plate, the Peacocks tallied 21 hits including four apiece from Adams and Aguirre.  Mikey Henrichs and Sam Kortes each picked up three hits.  While the Peacocks did score nine runs, they also left 13 runners on base.  UIU had six extra base hits including five doubles.

Jack Hegarty of Bemidji State got the win improving to 2-0 on the season.  He threw four innings of relief holding UIU to just one run on six hits while striking out four batters.  In total, BSU struck out 12 batters while walking only one.  Both were huge factors in keeping all of Upper Iowa's runners from advancing.
