Game 1 Recap
The first game was scoreless through the first eight innings as the starters were marvelous. At the plate, the Peacocks finally got on the board in the top of the ninth when
Mikey Henrichs and
Andrew Kraus crushed back-to-back solo homeruns. Prior to Henrichs' at-bat, he was 0-3 on the day and was due in a big way at the plate. His third homerun leads the team and the dinger from Kraus was his second of the season.
The starter for BSU, Phil Bray turned in a great start in his own right. Bray threw eight innings and didn't give up a single run on five hits with eight strikeouts and only two walks.
On in relief in the ninth was Ryan Brezinski (2-1) who ended up giving up the four-baggers to Kraus and Henrichs.
The two round-trippers gave UIU a 2-0 advantage and that was just enough for Valdez (4-0) on the bump.
The junior lefty from Baldwin Park, California tossed a nine-inning complete game, his fourth time going the distance this season. The East Los Angeles College transfer gave up no runs on six hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters and walking only one Beaver. The shutout was also Valdez's third of the 2013 campaign and his 1.80 ERA is first on the team.
Two batters whom each had two hits were
Tyler Adams and
William Loza. The other two hits came from
John Dobson and
Ryan Citro.
Game 2 Recap
Senior southpaw Eric Anderson cruised through six innings of work in Game 2 as Upper Iowa took apart BSU 18-5. The bats were rolling from the beginning for UIU as they racked up 18 hits and scored at least 4 runs in 3 different innings. Six Peacocks finished with two or more hits as well.
After a two-run third inning, Upper Iowa would start to pull away in the top half of the fourth frame. William Loza muscled an RBI single up the middle scoring John Dobson to get things started. With two on,
Cody Heiman hit a groundball to third base forcing a BSU error that would clear the bases. Adams and
Jimmy Pinakidis would each add an RBI single capping off a five-run inning for the Peacocks.
Leading 7-1 going into the top of the sixth, Upper Iowa sent 13 hitters to the plate starting with a
Sam Krick solo shot to right field. Heiman would again appear at the dish with two on. His 2-RBI double down the right field line extended the Peacock lead to 10-1. He came around to score on another Pinakidis RBI-base knock. After a fourth Bemidji State error, Adams came around to score increasing the lead to eleven. Krick, hitting for the second time in the inning, punched an RBI-single up the middle. With the bases full of Peacocks, Loza added another hit to score the 14
th run of the game. The seven-run, nine-hit inning gave UIU a very comfortable thirteen-run lead.
While the Upper Iowa bats were sizzling, Anderson was as cool as the other side of the pillow on the rubber. The senior allowed just one hit through the first ten Beaver batters. The Inglewood, California native allowed his first and only run of the day in the fourth inning after an RBI-single from Trevor Purvis. Anderson would settle down and retire six straight hitters to get himself to the sixth inning. The lefty finished the day allowing just 6 hits with 9 strikeouts and no walks.
Three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh added four more runs to the impressive total of 18 for the Peacocks. Loza finished a perfect 4-4 at the dish leading the way for UIU. Pinakidis and Krick added 3 hits, while 3 other Peacocks finished with 2 hits each. Krick and Heiman led the way with 3 RBI, while Pinakidis and Loza added 2 of their own. The 18 runs is a team high for Upper Iowa in 2013.
