This Weekend in Peacock Baseball... The Peacocks will be the away team this weekend on the scoreboard, but UIU will be playing at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. Upper Iowa is hosting the four-game series with the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday due to the field conditions in Bemidji, Minnesota. BSU comes in with a record of 12-14 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC.
33’s a Triple Threat... Mikey Henrichs (#33) is doing it all in his final year with the Peacocks using his bat, glove and legs. The senior from Hartford, Iowa leads all of NCAA Division II with a .480 batting average on the season with 36 hits including 7 doubles, a triple and a pair of homers to slug .680, which is third best in the NSIC and ranks 30th in the country. UIU’s third basemen is also second in the nation and leading the NSIC in on-base percentage at .602 thanks to his hits and 18 walks; second best in the NSIC only to his teammate Tyler Adams (20). The senior is leading the UIU offense with 23 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. Henrichs has also swiped 10 of 13 bases; the fourth highest total in the NSIC and 73rd best per game average in the nation. The UIU record for batting average in a season is .471 by Pat Bollman in 1982.
“Dez”-ling Performance... Martin Valdez has led the UIU pitching staff this spring posting a 3-1 record and an earned run average of 2.32 in a team-high 31 innings. The junior from Baldwin Park, Cal. has struck out 30 batters and is holding opposing batters to a .211 average, the fourth lowest in the conference. His ERA is the sixth best in the NSIC, while the 24 hits he’s allowed are tied for third best and the 9 runs allowed are tied for fourth best. He has thrown the second most innings per game and has fanned the eighth most batters among NSIC hurlers.
Dueces Wild... Senior Rory Kolo (#22) is 1-3 on the season, but is 1-1 with a save in his last three appearances including a pair of complete games. The Whitewater, Wis. native has thrown 18.2 innings in his last three trips to the mound and allowed just 8 earned runs while posting a 3.86 ERA and holding opponents to a .236 average. On the season, Kolo is holding batters to a .259 average (14th NSIC) allowing only 29 hits (6th NSIC) in 29.2 innings.
Monee Monee... Monee, Illinois product Dan Cwertniak threw well against Augustana on Tuesday earning a no-decision after six innings. The sophomore right hander allowed a run on five hits while striking out four. For the spring, he has appeared in five games making two starts including a complete game. In 21.2 innings, Cwertniak has posted a 4.57 ERA and held opponents to a .259 average.
“1” for the Money, “2” for the Show... Number 12 for the Peacocks, John Dobson, is having a solid spring for UIU. The junior first baseman is hitting .377, the second highest average on the team, with 29 hits including three doubles. The Waukesha, Wis. native is slugging .416 and has driven in 11 runs while crossing the plate 11 times. After spending two years sharing time behind the plate, Dobson has found a home at first defensively for the Peacocks.
