Beavers Sweep Peacocks in Fayette

Minot State 6 - Upper Iowa 2 | MISU 5 - UIU 4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Peacocks and Beavers of Minot State got together for the first two contests of a four-game weekend series in Fayette.  Minot State got a complete game from Cole Stober in game one as they converted four hits, three walks and four hit batsmen into six runs for the 6-2 win.  The Beavers rallied from a 3-1 deficit in game two to post a 5-4 victory.  The teams combined for 26 hits, but they also teamed up to leave 23 runners on base.  After Minot State’s (10-12, 2-6 NSIC) sweep, the Peacocks fall to 10-11 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Minot, N.D., but Winter Storm Walda forced the site switch to Robertson Woods Field; although Upper Iowa was the visitors in the game and on the scoreboard.

The two teams are scheduled to be back on Robertson Woods Field in Fayette tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.

Game One Recap

Minot State was first on the scoreboard as they plated a pair of runs in the third inning on just one hit and one Peacock error.

Upper Iowa answered with a run in the top of the fourth.  John Dobson singled through the left side and then came all the way home on a triple over the centerfielder’s head off the bat of Ryan Citro.

After the Beavers regained their two-run lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth, the Peacocks once again answered to pull within one in the top of the fifth.  The first two Peacock batters of the inning reached on singles, but both were thrown out at second trying to swipe the bag by Connor Moughtin. A pair of Beaver errors allowed Sam Kortes to score an unearned run and get UIU back within one, 3-2.  Mikey Henrichs singled, but the Beavers threw the ball away allowing the run to score.

Minot State added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to build their lead.  Upper Iowa was unable to scratch the scoreboard again as they fell 6-2.

Eric Anderson suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) after throwing just 2.1 innings.  He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out three before being ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Matt Banks and Mitch Luebbe both surrendered a run in a combined 2.2 innings, while Jordan Kearns allowed two runs on a pair of hits.

Stober threw seven innings allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out six Peacocks.

Game Two Recap

Upper Iowa quickly matched their game one run total in the top of the first inning in game two.  Tyler Adams opened the game with a walk and advanced to third on a Henrichs’ single through the right side.  Adams scored on a Kraus double to right and Jose Aguirre hit a sacrifice fly to get Henrichs home and give UIU a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Mike Turcotte tripled to right center and came home as Andrew Roach sent a sacrifice fly to right.

With the Peacocks leading 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Minot State loaded the bases with no outs.  As the Peacock infield attempted to turn a double play at second the throw to first got away, but the field umpire called an illegal slide on the Beaver base runner heading into second and froze the runners at second and third so a run did not score on the awarded double play.  After a walk to reload the bases, the Peacocks and starter Martin Valdez escaped unscathed thanks to a ground out to second.

In the fifth, Upper Iowa added a run on three hits.  Henrichs reached a bunt single and moved to second on a Kraus single.  After a sac bunt by Aguirre, Dobson singled to right center to plate Henrichs and give the Peacocks a 3-1 advantage.

Minot State tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits including a pair of singles and two doubles.  The Peacock defense and Valdez once again escaped a bases loaded jam in the inning stranding three Beavers on the base paths to head to the seventh inning tied, 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, UIU loaded the bases with one out and freshman Sam Krick hit a line drive toward the gap in left center.  MISU’s Turcotte sprinted and dove to make the grab, but UIU was able to score from third on the sac fly.  Kraus, Aguirre, and Dobson singled in three straight at bats with one out to fill the bases.

The Beavers did not let Upper Iowa stay on top for long as they scored a run on three hits against reliever Dan Riggs in the bottom of the seventh.  Roach doubled to left center with two outs and came home on a single by Moughtin.  UIU escaped any further damage as they left the bases packed with MISU runners for the third time of the game.

After putting runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth, the Beavers took a 5-4 lead when reliever Tanner Funke was called for a balk scoring the runner from third.

In the top of the ninth, Kraus led the inning off with a single up the middle.  A sac bunt by Aguirre was mishandled by the Beaver first baseman and the Peacocks had runners on first and second with no outs.  MISU’s defense cut the lead runner down at third as UIU tried another sac bunt.  After a shallow fly for the second out, the game ended on a strikeout as Minot State claimed the 5-4 victory.

Valdez took the no-decision after leaving with the lead, 4-3.  The junior lefthander threw six innings allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out four batters.  Stenberg took the loss with just a third of an inning after allowing a hit and walk.

Jarrett Duchscher came in relief and earned the victory to improve to 2-0 with two innings of work.  MISU starter Jesse Goertzen earned a no-decision but allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks.
