Upper Iowa Falls to Mansfield Rounding Out Play in Florida

Mansfield 10 - Upper Iowa 6

Box Score In game two Friday afternoon, Upper Iowa took on the Mountaineers of Mansfield Unviersity to round out their play in the Winning Inning Clearwater Invitational. The Peacocks dug themselves in an early hole, stranded 18 baserunners and ended up falling to Mansfield by a score of 10-6. With the loss, UIU falls to 7-6 while the Mountaineers improve to 3-2 in their 2013 campaign.

Mansfield scored two in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Upper Iowa scored for the first time in their half of the fifth frame. William Loza led things off with a single to left field. Tyler Adams then reached on an error by the third baseman and moved to third on the errant throw putting Loza at third. Samuel Kortes then stepped in and flew out to right field allowing Loza to cross home plate and put the Peacocks on the board.

In the top of the sixth, UIU pushed two more across to make the score 8-3 in favor of the home team on the scoreboard. Eric Anderson started the rally with a single and one out later, Jimmy Pinakidis walked to put runners on first and second. A Loza single then loaded the bases up for Adams. The Onalaska, Wisconsin native singled home Loza and kept Upper Iowa moving station to station. Another sacrifice fly from Kortes brought in Pinakidis. The Peacocks then left the bases loaded to end the inning.

MU scored a run in their half of the sixth to increase their lead back to six, 9-3.

In the seventh, UIU was unable to get any baserunners in and left the bases loaded for the second inning in a row.

Upper Iowa shrunk the Mountaineers lead to four by bringing in two runs in the top of the eighth.

Both teams added another run before it was all said and done and the black and red came out on top, 10-6.

The Peacocks are off until March 23 when they will begin a four-game series against the Marauders of U-Mary to begin NSIC play.
