Upper Iowa Continues Play in Clearwater with Sweep of Ohio Valley

Upper Iowa 6 - Ohio Valley 0 || UIU 13 - OVU 6

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Peacocks continued their play in the Winning Inning Clearwater Invitational Monday afternoon. The doubleheader featured Upper Iowa and the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University. UIU took game one 6-0 thanks to complete game from Martin Valdez. In the second contest, the offense for the Peacocks took over and scored 13 runs in just as many days to win 13-6 and improve to 6-2 on the season. Meanwhile, OVU has lost six straight and sit at 2-6 in the young 2013 campaign.

Game 1 Recap

Just like in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 15 against the University of Minnesota, Crookston, Valdez was dealing. The Baldwin Park, California native went the distance tossing seven innings and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out nine batters and walking none. The junior took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Logan Dan broke it up to lead off the top of the sixth frame for Ohio Valley.

With the way the Northview High School product was throwing, six runs was plenty of offense for Upper Iowa. In the bottom of the first, UIU brought across five runs to break the game open early.

Tyler Adams led it off with an infield single to the second baseman. Next up, Ryan Brown blooped a single to right field putting runners on the corners for Mikey Henrichs. After Brown was picked off, Henrichs scored Adams with an RBI single. Andrew Kraus followed Henrichs with a walk and the birthday boy, Jose Aguirre was hit by a pitch to load them up for John Dobson. The first baseman came through with a two-RBI double to left center field pushing across both Henrichs and Kraus. Aguirre would score on a groundout from Ryan Citro. The fifth run of the inning came when William Loza reached on an error scoring Dobson.

The Peacocks tacked on run number six in the bottom of the sixth when Brown reached on an error allowing Dobson to cross the dish.

Leading the way offensively for Upper Iowa was Dobson with a couple of RBIs while Henrichs and Citro each brought in one a piece.

Game 2 Recap

In game two, UIU brought across 13 runs just like game one on Sunday morning. The Peacocks tallied 11 hits and were also walked an astounding 13 times en route to a 13-6 victory.

In the top of the first, the bases were full before Adams scored on a wild pitch. Aguirre then brought home another with an RBI single right back up the middle.

To begin the third, Adams showed off his speed by running out a bunt single to the third baseman. The Onalaska, Wisconsin native then stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout by Matt Corbitt. Henrichs then walked and stole second as well. In stepped Kraus who belted a single through the right side of the infield moving Henrichs to third and Adams crossed homeplate. Henrichs then scored on a wild pitch that allowed Kraus to move to second. Kraus made it to third on a passed ball and Aguirre scored him with a single up the middle.

In the top of the fourth, Upper Iowa increased their advantage to 7-0 with two more runs. Cody Heiman led things off with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI triple to left field off the bat of Adams. Adams then jogged in thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field by Corbitt.

In the bottom of that inning, the Fighting Scots cut the deficit to five, 7-2. UIU wasn't even close to being done scoring though.

Sam Krick led off the fifth with his first career hit, a single down the left field line just out of reach of a diving third baseman. Samuel Kortes then singled and Heiman walked to load the bases for Adams. The next two runs scored on bases loaded walks followed by a run coming in on a passed ball. Then came two more bases loaded walks to increase the Peacocks' lead to 12-2.

After one run from OVU in the bottom of the fifth, the run differential was still at nine in favor of Upper Iowa.

UIU scored their 13th run of the game in the top of the sixth thanks to Jimmy Pinakidis' first career hit and RBI.

Three runs from Ohio Valley in the bottom of the sixth made the final score 13-6.

The two Peacocks with multiple hits were Adams and Aguirre with two a piece. Several more earned a hit as well including Corbitt, Henrichs, Kraus, Pinakidis, Dobson, and Krick.

On the mound, Matt Banks threw six innings and gave up six runs, five of them earned on 10 hits while striking out three and walking three. In relief, Daniel Riggs tossed one shutout inning with only one hit allowed to go with a strikeout and a walk.

Tomorrow, Upper Iowa is in Tampa, Florida for one game against the Spartans of the University of Tampa. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. They have Wednesday off before taking the field Thursday for a doubleheader with the Dragons of Tiffin University.
