Huskies Fast Start Dooms Peacocks

The St. Cloud State women's basketball team jumped on the Peacocks tonight storming out to an 18-2 lead in the opening minutes.  The Huskies never looked back en route to a 93-72 victory in St. Cloud, Minn.  Upper Iowa (7-18, 4-14 NSIC) shot the ball well on the night, but 22 turnovers limited the team's opportunities.

A pair of three-pointers from Lyndsay Carroll six minutes into the game kickstarted UIU's offense after the dominating start by the Huskies.  Two more trifectas by Carroll two minutes later cut the gap to nine, 23-14. 

St. Cloud was able to reestablish a big lead over the next seven minutes pushing their lead up to 20, 46-26.  The Peacocks turned the ball over five times during the SCSU run.  The home team took a 52-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Upper Iowa fell behind by 21, 67-46, as the second half opened, but a 7-0 run by the Peacocks cut the margin to 67-53.  The run was fueled by six points from Sam Thrapp.

St. Cloud continued to use pressure defense to reset their lead above twenty points running out to their largest lead of the game, 90-63, after outscoring UIU 23-10 as nine minutes came off the clock.

UIU shot the ball well from the floor knocking in 52% (26-50), but with 22 turnovers, the Peacocks lost out on opportunities at the rim.

Whitney Kieffer scored 22 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, while Carroll netted 13 and Thrapp added 11.  Carly Pagel recorded 7 points and 7 rebounds as well.

The Peacocks will be at home this coming Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, for the team's final home games of the season against the Mavericks of Minnesota State and the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul.
