This Weekend in Peacock Basketball... Upper Iowa comes back to Fayette for their final two home games of the season in Dorman Gym. Friday, the Peacocks host the #25 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato at 6 p.m. Saturday, Upper Iowa will take on the Golden Bears of Concordia University-St. Paul for senior night with tip also set for 6 p.m.
Chelsea Garcia and
Jennifer Herrick will play their final game on Prochaska Court.
Play 4Kay Night... Friday is Play 4Kay night sponsored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative in honor of former North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow, who battled breast cancer from 1987 to 2009.
“Kie Whit”-ness... Sophomore
Whitney Kieffer enters the weekend leading the NSIC and 21st in the nation in scoring at 18.6 points per game. The Scales Mound, Ill. native also sits atop the NSIC and 37th nationally in steals with 3 per game, while her 7.1 rebounds per contest are 13th best in the conference. Kieffer is also 65th in the country and 8th in the Northern Sun with an 82.5% (127-154) at the free throw line. UIU’s star sophomore has five double-doubles this season and is also a two-time NSIC Player of the Week.
New “Car” on the Lot... Freshman
Carly Pagel may only have 25 games under her belt, but she is playing like a veteran in the middle for UIU. The Sumner, Iowa product is 25th in the NSIC in scoring with 11.5 points per game, which includes a 12.6 average in Northern Sun contests. She is also averaging 7.1 rebounds per game this season, which is good for 14th in the conference.
“Sam”-enting Her Spot... Junior
Sam Thrapp has solidified her role as the point guard in the Peacock offense. Her 3.96 assists per game (4th in NSIC, 76th in the nation) have brought new life to a young UIU squad. She is also shooting 83.6% from the charity stripe which is 6th best in the NSIC. Since the calendar turned to 2013, Thrapp is averaging 9.5 points, 3.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds, while shooting 35% from three (14-40).
Beyond the “Hark”... Laura TerHark has been returning to freshman form over her last ten games from three-point range. The Algona, Iowa native has shot 19-54 (35.1%) from downtown to spark the Peacocks’ offensive attack. In two games against the Mavericks last season, the sharp-shooting sophomore shot 5-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc.
