UIU took on the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston in a doubleheader beginning at 6 a.m. The Peacocks swept both games taking the first contest by a score of 6-1 and game two 8-1.
Game One Recap
Martin Valdez (1-0) went the distance tossing seven innings of five-hit baseball and gave up only one run. The East L.A. transfer struck out six Golden Eagles and gave free passes to just three.
Upper Iowa got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second. The first run crossed the plate thanks to an RBI single to right field from
William Loza scoring
John Dobson. UIU went up 2-0 after
Tyler Adams scored Loza on an RBI double down the left field line.
After UMC cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth frame, the Peacocks didn't look back and increased their advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Adams continued his hot start to the season with a two-RBI single bringing in both
Ryan Citro and
John Dobson.
The scoring continued in the seventh and final inning when Loza scored Citro on an RBI single and Dobson scored for a third time after a groundout from
Cody Heiman.
Leading the offense for UIU were Adams and Loza with three and two RBI, respectively. Heiman also brought in a run to add to the total.
Game Two Recap
The momentum from game one carried over into game two for Upper Iowa thanks in part to the
Andrew Kraus show.
Again, the Peacocks were the first to score fueled by a solo homerun from Citro in the bottom of the second. Minnesota, Crookston tied things up in the top of the next inning, but that would be it for the Golden Eagles.
Five runs crossed the plate for UIU in the bottom of the third. The first came thanks to a bases loaded walk scoring
Samuel Kortes. Upper Iowa pushed their lead to 6-1 after Kraus belted a grand slam to right field.
Kraus kept up the good vibrations in the very next frame with RBIs five and six when he roped a double down the right field line. The base knock scored both
Matt Corbitt and Adams. At that point, the lead for Upper Iowa was 8-1 and that is how it ended.
The Peacocks received yet another positive outing from a starter when
Blake Seehusen toed the rubber. The Bristow, Iowa native lasted 4.1 innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out four and walking one. In relief, Dan Cwertniak threw 1.2 innings of no-hit baseball to go with one strikeout and walk a piece.
Nick Tuttle sealed the game for UIU with an inning pitched and gave up no runs on one hit.
Kraus was the offensive catalyst with six RBI while Citro brought in his first RBI of the morning on his solo shot.
UIU is off until March 10 when they begin play in the Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, Florida during spring break.
