The Peacock baseball team opened this year's NSIC Metrodome Classic against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State this afternoon. Upper Iowa and SMSU split their double header as the Peacocks claimed game one, 6-4, and the Mustangs picked up the 7-2 extra inning win in game two.
Upper Iowa will have to recover quickly tonight as they are slated to return to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome tomorrow for an early morning double header with the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston. The first pitch for tomorrow's double header is scheduled for 6 a.m.
Game One Recap
Eric Anderson threw 5.1 innings and cruised through his first five innings of work before running into trouble in the sixth inning. Anderson (1-0) earned the win striking out 7 Mustangs and allowing 4 runs on 8 hits.
Matt Banks came to the mound in the sixth and eventually closed the door on SMSU and then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up a save.
The Peacocks took a 3-0 lead in the third inning after loading the bases with no outs. UIU's first run came on a fielder's choice by
Tyler Adams and the second run as
Matt Corbitt singled to left field. The third run came as the Mustangs were turning two on the infield.
Will Loza drove in a run in the fourth inning with a single to left and
Jose Aguirre drove one Peacock home with a sac fly to left.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the 6th, the Mustangs rallied with 4 runs on 7 hits. Upper Iowa answered with an insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Ryan Citro hit a ground-rule rbi-double to left.
John Dobson, Loza and
Cody Heiman all tallied a pair of hits to lead UIU at the plate.
Game Two Recap
The Mustangs were the first team on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. SMSU teamed up a pair of hits with a Peacock error to score two runs.
Upper Iowa came up empty at the plate until the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Peacocks turned to Adams to provide the spark. UIU's center fielder singled down the left field line to drive in two and tie the game.
The Mustangs did not let their momentum get away for long. In extra innings, SMSU scored five runs on just two hits and a Peacock error to jump out to a 7-2 lead.
UIU could not push a run across in their final at bats as they finished the day with a split .
Rory Kolo started and earned a no-decision for the Peacocks and threw 5 innings while striking out 5 and allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits.
Tanner Funke took the loss for UIU with 3 inning pitched. Funke allowed 5 runs on 3 hits while striking out 3.
Adams led UIU at the dish with 3 hits and a pair of runs batted in.
