Upper Iowa Places Sixth at NWCA National Duals

UIU defeats #8 Findlay 19-15, but falls to #2 Newberry 24-12

Upper Iowa, the current #5 team in the country, placed sixth at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals after finishing the weekend with a 3-2 record.  On Sunday, the Peacocks advanced to the fifth place match thanks to a morning win over #8 Findlay, 19-15.  UIU dropped the final dual of the tournament to #2 Newberry, 24-12, to finish sixth over the weekend.

Carl Broghammer lead the Peacocks over the weekend with a 5-0 record including a win by fall against Findlay.  Wade Gobin and Blake Sorensen each won both of their matches today and four of five over the weekend.  Trevor Franklin won his only match of the day and three of four in his matches.  Chris Paulus won his only match of the day to earn his second win of the duals.

After Paulus and Franklin earned decisions to open the dual with Findlay, the Oilers claimed three straight decisions to take a 9-6 lead.  Gobin scored a 13-5 major decision and Sorensen followed with a 7-4 decision to give UIU a 13-9 lead.  After a decision to Findlay, Broghammer notched a pin at the 2:32 mark to score some big bonus points for UIU.  Findlay closed out the match with a victory, but UIU won the dual 19-15.  Each team won five matches, but the Peacock's four bonus points were the difference.

In the fifth place match against #2 Newberry, the Peacocks made some substitutions to their lineup and fell behind 18-0 before posting their first win.  Gobin scored a pin to get UIU on the board and Sorensen added another 7-4 decision.  Broghammer claimed the only other win for UIU with an 8-2 win as the Peacocks fell 24-12.

On Saturday, the Peacocks defeated #20 Kutztown, 23-15, in their first dual, but lost to #4 St. Cloud State, 29-12, in the quarterfinals.  UIU advanced to day two thanks to a 37-7 win over Limestone on Saturday.

Upper Iowa returns to Dorman Gym this week for two matches.  The Peacocks will host the Marauders of U-Mary on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and the Beavers of Minot State on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
