St. Charles, Missouri – In what started out as a sweet road trip to Missouri, ended bitterly for the Upper Iowa men’s soccer team. After stealing a victory over Southwest Baptist University on Thursday, the Peacocks had one stolen from them at Lindenwood University. The Lions’ Hernan Gonzalez scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 71st minute and sent UIU home packing with a 1-0 loss.

The Peacock defense started the match very strong as Lindenwood was only able to attempt two shots in the first half. UIU’s offense, or more specifically midfielder Marco Garcia, matched that production, also taking two first half shots. Garcia’s shots did not find the back of the net, though, with the first sailing wide and the second high.

That’s when the Peacock’s production dropped off and the Lions offense stepped up.

Both teams went into halftime scoreless, but the Lions came out firing on all cylinders in the second period. Lindenwood attempted a total of 12 shots in the final 45-minute period and earned the only goal of the game at the 71:55 mark.

UIU stumbled on offense after the halftime break and managed just one shot on goal, with that shot coming from midfielder Troy Parker.

The Peacocks three shots is their second-lowest total this season. UIU attempted only two shots back on September 2nd against Regis University in a 2-0 loss.

UIU falls to 3-5 this season after the loss and to 1-2 in the MIAA.

The Peacocks will travel to Mount Mercy this Wednesday with a chance to sweep the Mustangs. That match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
