The Peacock men's soccer team got their first taste of conference play since becoming an official NCAA Division II member prior to the 2005 season today in Fayette. At the time of Upper Iowa's move up, the other eleven athletic programs joined the Northern Sun Conference prior to the 2006-07 academic year; but men's soccer is not sponsored by the NSIC, so the team was an NCAA DII indepent the last six years. This season Upper Iowa is an associate member to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, or MIAA, who reinstituted men's soccer as a conference sponsored sport.
Upper Iowa welcomed Truman State to Pattison Field for their inaugural match in the MIAA.The Bulldogs pressured the Peacock defense throughout the first half outshooting the home team 13-5, but it was their twelfth shot of the half that scratched the scoreboard for the first time.
Truman State's Charlie Backus took a shot that was blocked by the UIU defense, but the rebound was collected by Andy Chapman, who drove a strike off the left post and into the net from six yards away. The goal came in the 43rd minute and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime.
Truman State added to their lead in the 59th minute on a corner kick. Backus lined up for the corner kick and connected with Chapman in the air. The Bulldog senior put his head on the cross and rocketed the ball to the back of the net.
UIU's
Troy Parker cut the margin in half with a long strike past the keeper. Parker's shot came from just off-center and was deposited inside the right post after running under the keeper's hands.
Alejandro Castaneda earned the assist on the goal.
The Peacocks only managed a few other opportunities as time ran out. Truman State came away with the 2-1 decision and improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while UIU falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Truman State outshot Upper Iowa 20-11 in the match including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Nick Wallner made two saves while allowing the Parker goal to earn the win.
Jordan Bell took the loss after giving up the two goals, but did make six saves for the Peacocks.
Upper Iowa will return to Pattison Field on Sunday for a match with the Tigers of Marshalltown Community College. The contest is scheduled to start at approximately 3 p.m. following the women's match with Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m.
