Game Two Box Score

Upper Iowa’s regular season came to an end today at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette.  The #5 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato dominated the first game piling up 17 runs on 21 hits, while holding their hosts scoreless for the 17-0 win.  In game two, MSU used a five-run seventh inning to separate from UIU and claim the 8-1 victory.

With the results in Fayette and other games around the NSIC, the Peacocks finished the regular season in seventh place and will miss out on the NSIC Championships by a half game behind the University of Minnesota Duluth, who swept the University of Mary to catch the Peacocks and claim the final postseason spot.  Upper Iowa finished the season with a 16-19 mark in NSIC play and a 20-30 overall record.

Game One Recap

The Mavericks overpowered the Peacocks in game one thanks to an eight-run second inning as the visitors raced out to an early lead.  Minnesota State used eight hits in the second inning to chase Peacock starter Rory Kolo and added six more runs on six hits in the third to push their advantage to 14-0.

The Peacocks threatened with runners in scoring position and one out in the sixth, but the Mavericks kept the home team off the score board.  The runners came when Tyler Adams walked for the second time and moved to third on a Rudy Casillas double down the line in right field.

MSU added three runs in the seventh to set the final margin at 17-0 and claim the victory.

Tyler Ockuly earned the win and improved to 4-3 on the season with six innings of work; the Mavericks’ right hander held UIU to just two hits while striking out seven batters.  Aaron Page pitched in the seventh to close out the game.

Juve Reyes had a pair of singles in the game to put his name on two of the three Peacock hits.

Game Two Recap

The Mavericks struck first in game two with a run in the opening inning and added two more in the fourth on a homerun by Mike Eckhart, his second of the weekend over the leftfield fence.

Back-to-back, one-out singles in the fourth by Mikey Henrichs and Andrew Kraus gave UIU their first threat of game two, but the Peacocks were unable to push the runners home.  Upper Iowa put two runners on with one out again in the sixth thanks to hits by Adams and Henrichs, but the home team was unsuccessful scratching the scoreboard.

In the seventh, Minnesota State used four hits, two walks and hit batsmen to score five runs and push their lead to 8-0.

Henrichs opened the ninth inning with a double to left center and scored on a ground out by Arntson for the lone run on the Peacocks’ line.

At the plate, the Peacocks managed just seven hits in the second game.  Henrichs had a pair of singles and double to account for three of UIU’s hits.

Jason Hoppe improved to 5-1 with five innings of work allowing four hits and striking out three batters.  T.J. Larson threw well in relief picking up three shutout innings prior to Mathias Butala closing the game out in the ninth.

Matt Treybig suffered the loss for UIU falling to 2-3 after surrendering eight runs on ten hits in 6.2 innings.  The senior struck out four Maverick batters.  Fellow senior Cole Hanson did not allow a run in his 2.1 innings of work.
