The Peacock baseball team was swept in their final midweek double header at Robertson Woods Field this season. St. Cloud State University, ranked 18th in the latest NCBWA Poll, took game one by a 9-1 count and then used three home runs to get out of town with a 10-5 win in game two. With the wins, SCSU pushes their win streak to 13 games and improves to 38-10 overall and 22-6 in the NSIC. The two losses send UIU's NSIC record back under .500, 15-16, and drop their overall record to 19-27. Upper Iowa remains in sixth place, but the race for the final spot in the NSIC Tournament still involves five teams.
Logan Birr pushed his record to 9-0 with a six inning effort in game one. The Husky hurler allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six Peacocks.
The run for UIU came in the first. With two outs,
Mikey Henrichs and
Andrew Kraus singled and
Patrick Arntson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Ryan Kreiner picked up an rbi with a walk, but the inning ended without any further scoring.
The Peacock run tied the game, but would be the last mark on the scoreboard for the home team.
SCSU scored a run in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and sixth and added two more in the final inning to claim the 9-1 win.
Daniel Riggs suffered the loss throwing three innings and allowing five runs, two were earned, while walking five and striking out two.
Miguel Helguera threw four innings of relief allowing four runs, two were earned, on eight hits.
Kraus had two hits at the plate to lead the UIU offense.
In the second game, the Huskies took advantage of three hit batsmen, a single and an error to put two runs up in the first inning.
Upper Iowa put runners on the corners with one out in the first, but couldn't answer their guest's runs.
Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, the Peacocks strung three hits together to open the inning on an Arntson single, a Kreiner double and a Jon Dobson rbi-single. A second run came home thanks to a
Cody Heiman grounder to cut the lead to three.
A three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back. The blast by Michael Jurgella sailed over the wall in left and gave the visitors an 8-2 lead.
The Huskies tacked their third homer of the game on the board in the eighth expanding their lead to 9-2.
Upper Iowa made one last charge in the bottom of the eighth scoring three runs on four hits. The big hits of the inning were a Kraus rbi-single, an Arntson double and a two-run double from Kreiner.
The Peacocks pulled within four, 9-5, with one inning to play, but St. Cloud State marked the scoreboard for the final time with one in the ninth to push the final score to 10-5.
Trey Cook took the loss while
Blake Seehusen and
Matt Banks threw a combined 7.2 innings of relief.
Austan Bosch improved to 3-0 with the win going 7.1 innings.
The Peacocks tallied 13 hits, four more than the Huskies, but SCSU used the long ball to make their hits count for more.
The Peacocks will host the #5 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.), May 5-6. The program will recognize and honor their seniors between games on Saturday.
