The Peacocks used a six-run ninth inning in today's second game at Bemidji State to salvage a split in a pair of NSIC games. After the Beaver bats dominated the first game to the tune of a 12-1 victory, the Peacocks trailed 5-2 heading into the final inning of game two. The Peacocks scored five of their final six runs with two outs in the ninth to pull off their 8-5 win. With the split, UIU is now 10-17 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC.
Mario Madera improved to 4-0 on the season throwing a complete game in the second contest allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on 12 hits over nine innings. The senior right hander struck out eight batters.
Bemidji State scored a run in the second inning and held their lead until the top of the fifth when Upper Iowa tied the game thanks to an rbi-single by
Tyler Adams that scored
Juve Reyes.
The Beavers retalliated with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning reclaiming a 4-1 lead.
Each team scored a run in the eighth to keep the margin at three, 5-2. UIU's run came on a sac fly from
Mikey Henrichs that plated Adams.
In the ninth, Upper Iowa loaded the bases with one out thanks to a hit batsman and a pair of singles by
Ryan Kreiner and Adams. A fielder's choice by
Rudy Casillas forced a run across the plate and left runners on the corners with two outs and the Peacocks down two, 5-3.
Casillas took second without a throw by the Beaver defense to get into scoring position and the move paid off.
Andrew Kraus delivered a game-tying double down the right field line that scored both runners. After an infiend error, UIU's inning was still alive with two on and Henrichs coming to the plate. The junior Peacock put the visitors on top for good, 8-5, with a three-run blast over the wall in left centerfield.
Madera came out in the ninth and shut down the Beaver bats quickly using the momentum the UIU offense created striking out the final batter to end the game.
Adams tallied three hits in the game and Casillas, Kraus and Henrichs all picked up two hits each.
Bemidji State's Phil Bray dominated the Peacock lineup in the first game holding UIU to just one run on two hits. In fact, the Peacock run scored without a hit after three walks to load the bases and a ground out that plated a Peacock.
After a great first inning by Peacock starter
Matt Treybig, in which he struck out the side in order, Head Coach Mark Danker had to go to his bullpen due to an injury to the senior righthander.
The Beavers jumped on the opportunity and scored three runs in the second, two in the third, and put the game away with seven in the sixth inning.
Logan Kalis spearheaded the BSU offense with three hits in four at bats including two homeruns; he scored three runs and drove in five for the home team.
The two teams will return to the diamond in Bemidji, Minn. tomorrow afternoon at noon for the final two games of their series.
